As a child when ever my dad’s family went to grandma house for breakfast we always had chorizo and eggs, homemade refried beans, salsa and tortillas. I remember these family breakfasts as fond memories. The loud conversations, children running around and arguing for who had to sit at the kids table and who didn’t.
As we grew up and moved away, and everyone started their own traditions this one that I always wanted to keep with my children. At least the meal. Chorizo and eggs with refried beans, and everyone around the table together.
The real challenge with that is not so much the food but the people gathered around your table. The memories they bring and the stories they tell. While I can serve the same food, the memories created are new and help to carry the past into the present.
What I wouldn’t give to have all those same people gathered around the table once more, to argue over who gets to sit where, and to hear all the loud opinions they have on the wide world.
The table has changed and the family has grown. We haven’t all joined together for a meal in many years. Maybe one day, but until then we have the food the brought us all together to share with new friends and family.
