The Origin of Jumping the Broom

Waving a broom over the heads of a couple while marrying was meant to ward off spirits. The ritual was practiced during the 1800s in the Southern United States when they were not permitted to wed legally. It is still a highly regarded part of the ceremony in African-American culture today!

When it comes to having a stylish wedding, there's more to decor than you know! One issue a lot of brides have is that they want a dream venue, but fail to consider the decor budget when they book it. Wedding design/decor should be a large part of your budget. After all, this is what you and your guests will remember. The ceremony is over in just a few seconds, but the reception and celebrating go on for hours. We listed our 5 top tips for a stylish wedding:

1. Florals & Lighting - A huge part of wedding decor which can literally transform a space. Fresh flowers, candles and lighting add that luxurious touch.
2. Draping - When in doubt drape! I'm a huge advocate for draping because I have seen horrible rooms turn magical when drapes are brought in. We just LOVE drapes!!
3. Venue Budget - If you don't have the money for your dream venue, consider a less expensive venue and add number 2!
4. If you're going to use linens, they MUST hit the floor. Your guests should never see table legs--ever.
5. Chairs - Chair covers are very 1990s...opt for renting chairs instead. There are numerous styles to choose from, Chiavari, ghost, Louis, chameleon, garden style and more. Chair rentals usually start at $6 or chair to $20 or more for certain styles.

We're posting this a day early to share a few traditions on how to bring in the lunar new year!!

- Clean your house before midnight!
- Buy food & snacks, decorations, clothes, and fireworks before the 21st!
- Offer sacrifices to the ancestors so that they "eat" first. Offerings are placed in front of a shrine and may include meat, wine, joss sticks and joss paper.
-Enjoy a reunion dinner with all family members and eat dumplings, Nian Gao (sticky rice), and spring rolls.
- Give money in red envelopes to kids.
- Stay up late until midnight only until the firecrackers die down.
