This is important. Be sure you prioritize things like the venue, the officiant and time off from work for obtaining the license. Remember - starting in October there will be a 48 hour waiting period between applying for the license and being able to pick it up.

When you get married in Connecticut, a Justice of the Peace (JP) has to sign off that it's a legitimate marriage. But sometimes they are not and there has been no recourse for those who just confirm they are anyway. Until now.

Secretary Thomas got a law passed that does a number of things including barring JPs from performing a marriage they know is fraudulent, allows the Secretary of the State's office to investigate misconduct and hold bad actors accountable, holds JPs personally liable for harm caused by their misconduct, and created a working group tasked with examining marriage fraud, reporting back in 2027.

Justices of the Peace aren't law enforcement. But they're often in a real position to help prevent fraudulent marriages. Now there's a clearer line of accountability where none existed.

Couples with Fall weddings - please note, the law in Connecticut changes on October 1st. There will be a 48 hour waiting period between getting a license and being married. The Secretary of State will be sending out clarification to Town Clerks soon as to what this means specifically. It is unclear as to whether there will be a 48 hour wait between picking up your license and getting married or whether it’s between the swearing and signing the license and actually being able to pick it up.

We will have to see.

The purpose of this law was to discourage out-of-state “convenience” marriages between an American citizen and a non-citizen who are getting married solely for a green card.

It will cause inconvenience for many couples who are coming to Connecticut a day or so before their planned wedding and now will have to get here earlier in order to get their license.

A marriage license in Connecticut is good for 65 days. I urge all couples NOT to wait until the last minute to get their license in any case.
