New legislation - starting October 1st, there will be a waiting period between getting a license and getting married —- other changes as well.

The JP bill makes the front page across the state! While the headline-grabber is all about sham marriages, professional officiants are grateful that the bar has been raised (e.g. training) and the JP appointment process.

This past weekend, the New York Times featured a special wedding planning section. If you are planning your wedding, I recommend it with one exception. They barely mention officiants. Without a JP or clergy person, you aren’t going to be married.

It is critical to interview your potential officiant and ensure that you’ve chosen the right person and that you have all of the details completed. For big weddings ( I don’t do many of those any more but can refer you to folks who do), many officiants are booked a year or more out.

Each state has special requirements about who can perform weddings, what needs to be completed on the license, who must return the license, etc.

Please be sure that you include finding and contracting with an officiant on your “to-do” list.
