This past Saturday, we were honored to experience the Grammy-winning, internationally acclaimed Brooklyn Youth Chorus in Westerly. It was a powerful night of music with the next generation of artists.
The Brooklyn Youth Chorus members sang alongside the Chorus of Westerly in a concert sponsored by the chorus and “Salt Marsh Presents,” a new initiative from the Stonington-based Salt Marsh Opera.
Before the concert took place, our Executive Director, Simon Holt, was interviewed by South County Star to talk about the event….
“When you think about the Brooklyn Youth Chorus you don’t just see a traditional choir in robes standing still on risers,” Holt said. “What you see is the heartbeat of New York City – a vibrant, diverse community coming together in harmony, proving that our differences are our greatest strength.”
Holt said, “It (the Brooklyn Youth Chorus) is much more than just a place to learn vocal technique or sing in world-class venues like Carnegie Hall, it is a safe space, a home away from home where children can express their true selves, build lifelong friendships, and explore the issues that matter to them most.”
