Augusta, Maine, started back in sixteen twenty-eight, when traders from Plymouth Colony set up camp along the Kennebec River. They called it Cushnoc, a bustling little trading post. Fast forward to seventeen fifty-four, Old Fort Western popped up—oldest wooden fort in the U.S., still standing proud! By seventeen ninety-seven, the town was named Augusta, after Pamela Augusta Dearborn, and it nabbed the county seat spot in seventeen ninety-nine. Maine became a state in eighteen twenty, and Augusta claimed the capital title in eighteen twenty-seven. Water Street was the heart of trade, though it got hit hard by fires, like the big one in eighteen sixty-five. The Kennebec’s been a lifeline and a challenge—floods, like the Great Flood of nineteen eighty-seven, kept folks on their toes. Today, Augusta’s a mix of history with its State House and Fort Western, and new energy with revitalized Water Street, buzzing with shops and brews. Pretty cool for a small capital, right? Perfect for a stroll through time!
