When a monarch first emerges from its chrysalis its wings are wrinkled and compressed. The butterfly needs to pump fluid from its abdomen into the wings so they will expand. This is a very vulnerable time for a butterfly because it will take another 2-3 hours before it will be able to fly.

Checking in on the black swallowtails this morning, these guys are to funny… Scary! I mean scary 😱🐛

The black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) is a common North American butterfly known for its black wings with yellow and blue markings, and its forked tails. Its caterpillars, called "parsley worms," feed on plants in the parsley family (like dill, fennel, and carrots) and are a common sight in gardens, sometimes considered pests, but are important pollinators. They have a unique defense mechanism: a foul-smelling, orange, forked organ (osmeterium) that emerges from their head when threatened.
