In one of the bridal groups I'm a part of, a girl just asked the always famous "Whats the going rate" question. There were answers all over the spectrum...but the following response was one of the best thought out and articulated responses I've seen to this question. So John Hobdy...if you are in this group....good on you sir...good on you.
"You will find anything from $300 to $2,000. Quality and fit for you specific event doesn't necessarily increase with price. Here's some consideration (these prices are for DJ services only - no uplighting, no photo booth, etc)
Below $600:
Typically the weekend warrior that has a day job
Pro: super cheap
Con: widest spectrum of talent (from ZERO to Awesome) and rarely properly insured or carry the required permits to legally operate.
$600-$1,000
Typically the people that do this for a living, are multi-ops, or do it on the side but have years of experience and just love what they do.
Pro: it's typically how they put food on the table so they have a true stake in the success of your reception
Con: some multi-dj companies are just a group of DJs that share events or a "national company" that books weddings and gives to the lowest budget so consistency in service can be an issue and you really need to do your homework.
$1,000+
Usually the experienced pros that don't want the weekly hustle, work solo, and get top dollar for their presence.
PRO: this level typically runs the latest and greatest top of the line equipment, has 15+ years of experience, and knows their stuff.
CON: they tend to be more specialized in what they do and tell you how the reception should go with little flexibility as they want to protect their brand.
Read reviews online, Google the business owner to see what you find, and set up a meeting. The one you feel is the best fit - no matter what price level, has now determined your budget."
