Remembering Father Giulio Schiavi
Father Giulio Schiavi will be deeply missed by the Metro Detroit Catholic community. For 25 years, he was a fixture at countless life celebrations — baptisms, weddings, and funerals — offering humor, kindness, and a steady presence that touched everyone he met. His ministry often brought him to Penna’s, where the Penna family came to see him as one of their own.
Born in Onore, Italy, in 1935 and ordained in 1963 by the future Pope Paul VI, Father Giulio’s journey of faith took him from missionary work in Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea to decades of service in the United States.
He devoted more than 25 years to San Francesco Church in Clinton Township, becoming a cornerstone of Metro Detroit’s Italian-American community. With his health progressively worsening, he was transferred in 2020 to the Central Delegation of PIME Missionaries at the Community of Rancio di Lecco, where he passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025.
A Memorial Mass will be held at San Francesco Church on October 15 at 6:30 p.m., with refreshments to follow in the social hall.
