A five-star California resort gave up one of its entrances for a guest that weighed less than a golf ball. A hummingbird had built her nest on the handle of a Ritz-Carlton door.

What was normally a busy entrance suddenly became protected space.

In March 2026, visitor Katelyn Bell noticed the tiny nest at The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage, after seeing a sign that read, "Nature in Progress."

Rather than disturb the bird, hotel staff closed the entrance and redirected guests to another doorway while asking visitors to help protect the nesting hummingbird.

Bell later recorded the mother quietly tending her nest, and the video quickly spread across social media.

She also spotted several other hummingbird nests around the property, along with a larger bird nesting inside a basket the resort had intentionally placed for wildlife.

According to the resort, situations like this are not unusual. Staff work with a nature specialist who monitors wildlife across the property and helps ensure nesting birds are left undisturbed.

At a resort known for looking after its guests, the smallest one was given the front door.
