Starkville Natives Host Football and Life Skills Camp to Help Grieving Community

STARKVILLE, MS – Starkville natives, and childhood friends, Jeff Akins and William β€œBert” Robinson have teamed up to help their hometown heal by hosting a football and life skills camp.

The camp, scheduled for June 9 to June 13 at Westside Park in Starkville, is in response to the recent violence in the city and designed to reach at-risk youth.

Akins, owner of sports and fitness company Fasst Training, and Robinson, owner of BR Inspires, a life coaching company, say they wanted to help the city heal by doing what they know best.

β€œBeing from Starkville, I am deeply troubled by young people in this community losing their lives to senseless violence,” said Akins. β€œI wanted to do my part to help this community heal while providing hope and an outlet for the kids in this community.”

Akins, a Starkville High School football standout in the early 1990’s, says that he wanted to give back the best way he knows how.

β€œI eat, sleep, and breath football and football techniques and I feel that this camp will offer discipline, structure, and fun to kids at a time when many of them need it the most,” said Akins.

Robinson, who now resides in Charlotte, NC, hopes that his contributions to the camp will also bring positive change to the Starkville community.

β€œLife is about choices and if I can help the kids in Starkville make better choices, I’m all in,” said Robinson. β€œI wanted to offer life skills classes during the camp to teach the kids that decision making is important and that the wrong choices could lead to terrible outcomes for them.”

The camp is a four-day, all-inclusive camp culminating in a banquet for the participants.

The fee for camp attendees is $25, which includes registration, a t-shirt, food, and the banquet fee.

The camp will be staffed by volunteers and Akins and Robinson are hoping for a good volunteer turnout to be able to help as many kids as possible during the camp.
