Let’s talk about one more thing that doesn’t get said enough:
A “safe photographer” isn’t defined by gender.
I understand why people feel more comfortable with a female photographer in a vulnerable setting like bo***ir. That instinct makes sense.
But safety doesn’t come from identity.
It comes from behavior.
I’ve heard things said to clients (jokes, comments, pressure) that would immediately be called out if they came from a man.
But because of who it’s coming from, it gets brushed off.
And that’s the part that doesn’t sit right with me.
“Not okay for some” should mean “not okay for all.”
Boundaries don’t change depending on who’s behind the camera.
Respect doesn’t change.
Consent doesn’t change.
Safety doesn’t change.
The standard should be the same across the board.
Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about photographers.
It’s about clients feeling safe, respected, and in control.
Every.
Single.
Time.
