happy Black love day đĽšđ¤
one thing i was adamant about at our wedding was jumping the broom.
not just because itâs tradition but because itâs love.
during chattel slavery in the United States, enslaved people were denied the right to legal marriage. so our ancestors created their own ways to honor their unions before their community and before God.
jumping the broom was one of them.
so when we did this in our ceremony, it wasnât just about us. it was about love that existed before us. love that survived. love that made it possible for us to stand there at all.
as a proud Black american woman, descendant of the enslaved, i carry deep joy in the culture weâve created and the resilience that lives in our blood.
itâs been said that we donât know where we come from or that we donât have culture but nothing could be further from the truth.
we come from people who loved anyway.
who built family anyway.
who prayed anyway.
who hoped for a future they knew they would not see. but hoped anyway!
and today, my love extends beyond my husband and our marriage. itâs also love for my people: Black americans, descendants of the enslave and the history, strength, faith, and joy that shaped us.
made in the image of God. His Imago Dei
may we continue to honor the love, faith, and legacy of our ancestors â and carry it forward with pride.
