Meet the people Monday!

Hello! My name is Alex Carrico (she/her), and I am an Assistant Professor of Music History at the University of South Carolina. I am a faculty advisor for Madie Willard (the founder) and have been working with her for the past year on the “Music Field Day” project. My research specialities include traditional Irish music and disability studies with a specific focus on neurodiversity. Though I usually work with disabled individuals rather than the Deaf and hard of hearing, I am very excited to learn more about and make connections with the Deaf community in Columbia. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and cuddling with my dog, Willow.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far! We are over halfway to the goal and $95 away from $3,000!

Music is said to be the universal language. However, the reality is that our understanding of music often privileges a hearing-centric experience of music, which excludes the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. For music to be universal, we must expand our definitions to include the way the Deaf community enjoys music. Beyond sound audition, Deaf people experience music through poetry, visual stimulation, and vibration through the body. This requires the creation of an event where Deaf and hard-of-hearing students can do just that. Putting on an event such as this requires a team effort. Will you join our team and help us reach our goal? Our goal is to raise $5,500 by March 31st. Every gift, no matter the size, makes an impact.
