Today we will be discussing Tommy Rich!!
Tommy Rich, known as “Wildfire” Tommy Rich, was one of the biggest stars of the territorial wrestling era. His career began in 1974 and has spanned more than five decades, making him one of the longest-active wrestlers in history.
Early Career (1974–1979)
* Rich debuted in Tennessee at only 18 years old after training under Jerry Jarrett and others in the Memphis territory
* His natural charisma and fiery babyface style quickly made him a fan favorite
* In 1978 he won Pro Wrestling Illustrated Rookie of the Year, and by 1979 he was already a major regional star
Georgia Championship Wrestling Stardom
* Rich became one of the biggest attractions in Georgia Championship Wrestling, appearing regularly on the nationally broadcast TBS wrestling shows
* He had memorable feuds with Buzz Sawyer, Ole Anderson, Ivan Koloff, and The Fabulous Freebirds
* His intense brawling style and emotional promos made him one of the hottest stars in the NWA territories
NWA World Heavyweight Champion
* On April 27, 1981, Rich shocked the wrestling world by defeating Harley Race to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in Augusta, Georgia
* His reign lasted only four days before Race regained the title, but Rich became one of the youngest NWA World Champions ever
Later Career
* Throughout the 1980s he wrestled in Georgia, Memphis, Alabama, Puerto Rico, and WCW, winning numerous regional championships
* In the 1990s he worked in the USWA and Smoky Mountain Wrestling and later joined ECW as “The Big Don,” leading the Full Blooded Italians (FBI) faction
* Rich continued wrestling on the independent circuit well into his late 60s, appearing at legends events and special attractions

* One of the most popular stars of the territorial era and a major attraction on early TBS wrestling broadcasts.
Tommy Rich’s legacy is that of a wrestler who burned incredibly bright during the territory era. Even though his world title reign was brief, “Wildfire” remains one of the most beloved and recognizable stars of classic NWA wrestling.
