Elopement used to mean running away. Literally. It was two people defying their families, their church, sometimes the law, just to choose each other. No permission, no guest list, no dowry negotiations.
Somewhere along the way “eloping” became a synonym for “settling.” Like it was the backup plan for people who couldn’t afford the real wedding. We think that’s backwards.
Modern elopement isn’t about what you’re avoiding. It’s about what you’re choosing. No 200 person guest list you didn’t ask for. No seating chart politics. No going $30k into debt to perform a day for everyone except the two of you. It’s the same rebellion it’s always been, just aimed at different rules now.
