Krishna Temple in Utah Targeted by Gunfire

The ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, world-famous for its Color Festival, has recently come under attack in suspected hate crimes. Over the past several days, 20–30 bullets were fired at the temple building and the surrounding property. The incidents occurred during nighttime hours, and have resulted in thousands of dollars in structural damage, including to the temple’s hand-carved arches, said Vaibhavi Devi Dasi, co-founder of the temple.
On June 18, temple staff heard a loud noise and observed smoke coming from the temple’s radio station roof, but could not confirm its cause. A bullet hole was discovered in one of the temple windows, with the bullet traveling into a wall of the main worship space. Additional bullet holes were found in the building’s arches, and about 20 shell casings were recovered from the road just outside the temple’s security fence. Surveillance footage revealed a pickup truck parked in front of the property on the night of the shooting, though no suspect has been identified.
For decades, the Hare Krsna community in Spanish Fork has had a strong and positive relationship with their neighbors in Utah County. Monica Bambrough, a friend of the Krishna Community and the Assistant Director for the Mount Nebo Communication Council for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “We were saddened to hear the news of the recent violent attacks upon our friends at the Spanish Fork Krishna Temple. These senseless acts have no place in our communities.” She continued, “We are grateful for their presence and their teachings of peace in our community and will continue to foster relationships of love, kindness, service, understanding, and acceptance, and to have open dialogue with them and invite others to do the same.” Other LDS leaders visited to express their support and solidarity.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident and has increased patrols at the site. In response to the attacks, the temple is enhancing its safety measures. GARD, a security company in Springville, has offered to send a security surveillance truck to the Temple for two weeks free of charge. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction, and temple officials urge nearby residents to report any gunfire in the area. Local news outlets like ABC and Fox are also helping to get the word out in Utah County, appealing to viewers to come forward with any information.
