Coneflower is about as low-maintenance as it gets — full sun, doesn't ask for much water once it's established, and the pollinators go nuts for it all summer.

Here's the part most people don't know: leave the seed heads up through winter instead of cutting them back. Goldfinches will pick them clean, and they give you some actual structure in the garden when everything else is flat.

Funny thing about this time of year — your garden's already dressed for the party. Red bee balm going wild for the hummingbirds, white Echinacea wide open, and those blue hydrangeas out front? They're blue because our South Portland soil runs acidic — the plant pulls it right out of the ground and turns it into color. Nobody planned that. The dirt did it.
So go stand out there with a burger and take the credit. You earned it.
