Just wanted to share some of the amazing work SewLeana campers are making this year!
I ♥️ this girl and this quilt so much! M has been to every single one of our camps. Every year, her quilts get more elaborate and imaginative! We plan camp all year and I swear she plans her camp quilt all year!
This week’s theme was American Story Quilt traditions, particularly looking at artists such as Harriet Powers, Faith Ringgold, and Bisa Butler. We talked to the campers about ways to tell a story- in panels like Powers’ quilts; painted scenes, often fictionalized stories of a collective real experience, like Ringgold; or colorful portraits that leave the viewer to tell the story, like Butler. M created a montage of all three styles in the quilt that tells the story of her close friendships. Each dyed panel is a painted portrait with M and a friend. I think this quilt represents not only the intense friendships we have at 14 but also how much we all miss our friends and social lives at this strange moment in time. I’m so proud of M and her quilt!
