TONIGHT AND TOMORROW (8/1 and 8/2): 5p – 10pm
Opening of our newest gallery, a study in graffiti art: “The Sketty and Beanz Show”.
Below is a profile of our two artists. Come out and learn more about graffiti art!
How long have you been doing graffiti art? Skett: “18 years”.
Beanz: “6 years. And we’ve been working together for about 4 years”
What got you into graffiti art?
Skett: “Skateboard culture and 1990’s music. I’ve always liked to draw and eventually I started doodling graffiti. I developed my character at 16. I took all the stuff I liked and mashed it into one, cartoon characters, some skateboard logos, things like that.”
Beanz: “It started as a joke. I was working at an art store in Portland and you could always tell when the graffiti kids would come in because they were all secretive. We had a scratch pad where you could test pens where they would draw graffiti art, and I started writing Beanz there, and eventually started painting graffiti outside the store.”
What made you want to do this gallery show?
Beanz: “I like the juxtaposition, because graffiti has to be done in the streets, and a real gallery show is the polar opposite of that. Painting on canvas and stuff. I wanted to explore how different gallery art and graffiti are and still try to keep the essence of graffiti.”
Skett: "I’m just interested in spreading good vibes. Graffiti is about expression and we have a playful style that I think comes through.”
What would you like people to know about your show?
Beanz: “I never thought I would be in a gallery show, and if we can do it anyone can. Stay true to your art form.”
Skett: “Another essence of graffiti is that you put your stuff out there and you don’t know what’s going to happen to it. This gives people the opportunity to purchase something in the art form when they normally aren’t able to if they appreciate the art form.”
Anything else you’d like people to know?
Beanz: "I’d also like it to be an opportunity to ask questions about graffiti, if they don’t really understand it. We’re here to educate and explain it to people who are curious.”
THANK YOU Skett and Beanz for being a part of the LangLab community!
