Murder Is On The Air 📻

I have photographic evidence that something suspicious is happening.

Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to reveal precisely what. 📻🔎

Rehearsals for Murder Is On The Air are getting deliciously complicated.

It's 1957.

We're inside a television studio.

There are egos.

Secrets.

Relationships that may not be quite what they appear.

And then somebody ends up dead.

The trouble for our suspects is that YOU will be there asking questions.

This isn't a mystery where you sit politely in the dark and wait for actors to tell you what happened.

You'll watch.

You'll listen.

You'll interrogate suspects.

You'll compare notes.

And eventually, you'll have to decide:

Whodunit?

Last year's murder mystery raised more than $10,000 for our community. This year, we're returning to the scene of the crime with an entirely new mystery.

Calling Our Local Creatives 🎄✨

Something festive is beginning to glow at The Hearth...

On Saturday, November 14, we’re turning The Hearth into a Holiday Faire & Flea Market, and we’re looking for local vendors who want to help us bring it to life.

Artists. Makers. Jewelry. Handmade gifts. Vintage treasures. Flea market finds. Beautiful, quirky, useful things looking for their next home.

We have two ways to participate:

🎁 Indoor 10' x 10' spaces | $50
Perfect for holiday crafts, jewelry, art and other wares.

🌵 Outdoor 10' x 12' spaces | $30
Perfect for flea market and vintage merchandise.

The Faire will be open 9 AM–2 PM on Saturday, November 14 at The Hearth, 1915 N. Swan St.

Applications and payment are due November 6.

What if the rest of the year doesn't have to be a race?

We have arrived at that interesting turn in the year.

Summer's great outward push is behind us.

The holidays are visible on the horizon.

And there can be a strange temptation to look at the remaining three months of the year and think:

Hurry. Finish. Catch up. Do more.

I'm wondering about another possibility.

What if we went inward before we went forward?

What if we asked:

What is actually nourishing me?

What am I doing simply because I've always done it?

Who do I want around my table?

What work still has life in it?

What makes me feel that little spark of yes again?

The moon is beginning to release its light this week, and I'm feeling permission to do some releasing of my own. Not abandoning the work. Becoming more deliberate about where I put my energy.

Because the final months of a year don't have to be an endurance test.

Maybe they can be a return.

Back to the body. Back to creativity. Back to one another. Back to whatever makes us feel quietly alive.

That's what I'm carrying into October.

One Weekend, Two Community Tables

Apparently my weekend plans are:

Saturday: Put on something fabulous and talk into a microphone.

Sunday: Put food on a table and gather people around it.

I can live with this. 😄

Tomorrow evening I'm delighted to be serving as MC for Gala in the Gardens, the annual fundraiser for The Commons.

And then on Sunday, we'll gather again for the Community Potluck at The Hearth.

Two very different events.

But I've been thinking about what they have in common.

Community doesn't simply happen because people live near one another.

Somebody grows the food.

Somebody sets up the chairs.

Somebody makes the art.

Somebody volunteers.

Somebody washes the dishes.

Somebody gives.

Somebody says, “Come sit with us.”

And slowly, almost invisibly, those individual acts become the place we call home.

I'm grateful to spend this weekend in two spaces where people keep choosing to do exactly that.

Fall Break: What We're Really Teaching

Theatre teaches acting.

Obviously.

But that's rarely the part I'm thinking about most.

I'm watching a child offer an idea.

Another child changes it.

The first child has to decide whether to defend it, adapt it or discover that the new idea might actually be better.

Someone forgets what comes next.

Someone else helps.

Something goes wrong.

They keep going.

They make each other laugh.

They make something together.

That's the education hiding underneath the play.

Listen. Respond. Adapt. Contribute. Begin again.

Our Fall Break programs were designed with smaller age groups this year so we can give young artists challenges that actually fit where they are.

And Thursday is Kids Are Cooking Day, because collaboration gets even more interesting when somebody hands you a measuring cup. 🍲

Today is the first day of fall.

Equal light. Equal dark.

A little hinge in the year.

And maybe a good day to ask:

What do we want to make with the season ahead?

Around here, my answer includes superheroes, peculiar villagers, Taiko drums, musical theatre, improv, food, costumes and a whole lot of young people discovering what happens when somebody takes their ideas seriously.

TheActrix Fall Break Creative Studios are October 12–16 at The Hearth.

🎭 Ages 13+ | Youth Improv Performance Group

We've intentionally created smaller age groupings this year so that each experience can meet kids where they actually are.

Because a five-year-old and a thirteen-year-old both need imagination.

They just need different doors into it.

Registration is open now, including returning student and sibling discounts and our Creative Essay Contest for full or partial tuition awards.

Maybe this is the fall your young person discovers a new part of themselves.

WHAT ARE WE REALLY MAKING?

When I look back through photos from TheActrix camps, the pictures I love most aren't necessarily the performances.

They're the in-between moments.

Two kids figuring something out together.

Someone laughing so hard the scene has temporarily become unrecoverable.

A child concentrating over something they're making.

The older kid helping the younger one.

Flour on the table.

Costumes everywhere.

That moment when a child who was hanging back on Monday is suddenly right in the middle of everything on Friday.

That's what we're really making.

Yes, we teach theatre.

We act. Sing. Dance. Improvise. Drum. Cook. Create characters and tell stories.

But underneath all of it, young people are practicing how to have an idea, offer it, listen to somebody else's, and make something together that didn't exist before.

That feels especially worth protecting right now.

YOUR CHILD'S WORDS MATTER

I'd like to hear from the kids.

Not just the grown-ups filling out the registration form.

Them.

So we're offering a TheActrix Creative Essay Contest this fall, with selected entries receiving full or partial tuition awards.

And “essay” is being used rather generously here.

They can write.

Make a short video.

Draw something and explain it.

Write a poem.

Give me a monologue.

The question is:

What draws you to theatre, creativity or performing, and what would you like to discover, create or contribute at TheActrix this fall?

I'm not looking for perfect grammar.

I'm not looking for the child with the fanciest vocabulary.

And this is certainly not a contest to prove who “deserves” an opportunity.

I want to know what they have to say.

Returning students also receive special tuition pricing, and we have discounts for families enrolling multiple siblings.

If money is the thing making you hover over the registration button and then close the page, please talk to me before you decide this isn't possible.

13+: NOW IT BECOMES AN ENSEMBLE

Eventually, theatre changes.

You're no longer simply learning how to play the game.

You're learning how to hold the scene for somebody else.

Listen closely enough to catch an offer.

Take a creative risk.

Recover when it falls completely flat.

Build an idea with other people until none of you can quite remember whose idea it was in the first place.

That's ensemble.

We're continuing to gather the founding ensemble this September, and we'll begin once we have our minimum group of six.

The goal isn't simply to “take improv.”

The goal is to create an ongoing company of young performers who develop original material together, culminating this semester in an original holiday performance for The Hearth Holiday Festival.

And for our 13-year-olds who want MORE during Fall Break?

They can do Musical Theatre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Improv on Tuesday and Thursday.

Five afternoons. Two kinds of theatre. One very creative Fall Break.

A Special Friday Concert at The Hearth 🎶

Hello friends,

We have an unexpected treat to share with you this week.

This Friday, September 4 at 5:00 PM, The Hearth will welcome jongleur, an extraordinary voice and percussion duo featuring Julia Anne Cordani and James Koo, for a special joint benefit concert.

Their work is unlike a traditional concert.

jongleur creates immersive spiritual soundscapes through voice, percussion, improvisation, electronics, and ritual-inspired performance. Their concerts can be experienced in many ways: as music, as meditation, as prayer, or simply as a chance to listen deeply.

Julia Anne Cordani is a vocal artist whose work draws inspiration from figures on the margins of Christian theology and mysticism. Percussionist James Koo brings influences from traditional Chinese percussion, ritual practice, and contemporary experimental music. Together, they create performances that weave ancient spiritual traditions with modern sound.

It promises to be a beautiful and unusual afternoon.
