The Living History enactors are beginning to find their voices.

Not just memorizing lines. Discovering rhythm. Perspective. Contradiction. Humanity.

Over the next few weeks, these historical figures will step into rehearsal rooms, radio waves, and eventually live immersive performances at The Hearth. And one of the most fascinating things to witness is how differently each actor approaches the question:

“How do you portray someone complicated honestly?”

Billy the Kid.
Madam Millie.
Ben Lilly.
Theora Ailman.
Pluma.

None of them agree with each other.
Which is precisely why the conversations become interesting.

This week they rehearse for their upcoming debut at High Desert Live Radio Hour, and the room already feels charged with curiosity, humor, tension, and discovery.

History becomes much more alive when it starts arguing back. 🎭

Spent part of this week meeting with camp teachers, and I’m leaving those conversations feeling deeply grateful.

These aren’t people showing up to “babysit.”

These are artists and educators bringing real skill, imagination, discipline, humor, warmth, and lived experience into the room.

Taiko drumming.
Comedy & improv.
Mystery storytelling.
Shakespeare.
Fairy tales.
Cooking.
Ensemble building.
Creative confidence.

The kids coming into these camps this July are going to be genuinely cared for.

And that matters to me more than flashy marketing ever could.

The more I work in community arts, the more I believe this:

Creativity is infrastructure.

Not decoration.
Not an “extra.”

A town needs places where people can:
gather,
laugh,
risk,
imagine,
grieve,
practice courage,
tell stories,
and remember each other.

That’s part of what we’re trying to build through camps, workshops, rehearsals, concerts, readings, and community events.

Not just productions.

A living creative ecosystem.

This week carries a strange and beautiful rhythm.

Library by day.
Directors meetings by evening.
Camp planning somewhere in between.
And now a week of dog-sitting added to the mix. 🐾

Honestly?
I think caring for animals keeps people sane.

They do not care about productivity metrics or algorithms or branding strategy.

They care whether you noticed the sunset.
Whether you remembered dinner.
Whether you sat still long enough to breathe.

A good reminder.

June arrives softly this year.

Not empty.
Not idle.
Just… full of becoming.

Summer Reading begins.
Teachers are planning camps.
Directors are selecting one acts.
Dogs need walking.
Children need stories.
Artists need rehearsal rooms.
Communities need places to gather.

There’s something comforting about remembering that meaningful work is rarely one giant moment.

Usually it looks like:
showing up again tomorrow.

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that arrives after a meaningful production.

Sunburned shoulders.
Dust on costumes.
Voice slightly gone.
Heart strangely full.

DitchSpeare reminded me again that theater is one of the few places left where people willingly gather to imagine together in real time.

Thank you to every audience member who climbed into the ditch with us.
Thank you to our volunteers.
Thank you to our sponsors.
Thank you to the artists who gave their courage, creativity, bruises, timing, sweat, songs, and strange beautiful humanity to this project.

Outdoor theater asks for presence instead of perfection.

And this community showed up beautifully. 🌿🎭

One of my favorite things about DitchSpeare this year has been watching artists stretch beyond what they thought they could do.

Actors discovering movement.
Musicians stepping into storytelling.
Quiet people becoming bold.
Bold people learning how to listen.

That spirit is leading directly into our next adventure.

This June and July, TheActrix Studio will host a small Director’s Workshop & Practicum for emerging and aspiring directors.

Participants will explore:
🎭 directing fundamentals
🎭 rehearsal leadership
🎭 staging & storytelling
🎭 collaborative process
🎭 the beautiful chaos of turning ideas into live performance

Each participant will direct a one-act play culminating in public performances this July at The Hearth.

You do NOT need to be an “established director.” Curiosity, courage, imagination, and willingness to learn matter more.

Kickoff Workshop:
Sunday, May 31
2–5 PM

Space intentionally limited to keep the process intimate and hands-on.

If interested, message me a little about:
• your experience level
• what draws you to directing
• any June scheduling conflicts

Let’s build a tiny summer laboratory for brave theatrical experiments. 🎬✨

DitchSpeare closes this weekend…

…but honestly, one of the most exciting things happening in Silver City theater right now is watching new artists begin stepping into leadership.

We need directors.
We need stage managers.
We need designers.
We need producers.
We need people willing to gather humans together and say:
“What story shall we tell next?”

This summer’s Director’s Workshop is designed as a supportive practicum for people who want to grow those skills in community.

Not perfection.
Practice.

Not gatekeeping.
Experimentation.

Not “wait until you’re ready.”
Begin now.

Participants will direct one-act plays for a July showcase series at The Hearth, with mentorship and collaborative support throughout the process.

If your pulse quickens a little reading this, that may be your answer already.

Message me for details. 🎭

Opening weekend of DitchSpeare changed us.

Something happens when theater leaves the building and enters the landscape. The audience moves closer. The actors listen differently. Wind, silence, laughter, dusk, and birdsong all become part of the performance.

The show is evolving night by night.

Ancient words are finding new breath in the canyon. Shakespeare beside Sor Juana. Cervantes beside live music and movement. Comedy beside stillness. Dust beside moonlight.

No two performances are alike because the ditch itself is alive.

If you joined us opening weekend, thank you for becoming part of the story. If you haven’t yet come, there is still time.

🌙 Midweek performances TONIGHT! Tuesday, May 19 @ 7:30 + closing weekend May 22 @ 7:30, May 23 @ 5:00 & 7:30, May 24 @ 5:00, and May 25 @ 7:30.
