This will be the Shrewsbury-raised saxophonist’s first performance in the area in over 10 years.
Tenor saxophonist Jonathan “Lockjaw” Lorentz leads a powerhouse quartet that includes Tom Robinson (piano), Brendan “Low End” Dowd (upright bass) and Tim Gilmore (drums). Their set is high energy, blues-infused, and full of improvisation.
Raised in Shrewsbury, Jonathan spent his early years playing with his hometown Muddy Rhodes Blues Band, while learning jazz from Rutland area educators Glenn Giles and Bear Irwin. Lorentz later moved to NYC, where he studied with Lenny Pickett, Frank Foster and George Garzone, and played venues ranging from Smalls to CBGB’S, Radio City, the Bitter End, and the Blue Note. He earned international radio play and acclaim for his album Borderlands (Métier Jazz), for which Fanfare magazine stated "Lorentz has really got it: a great style, an explorative mind, and a concept that goes beyond the usual fare you hear from jazz groups."
Lorentz says that he’s “On top of the world excited to return home to play. Vermont is such a fantastic place, maybe even a state-of-mind. I have so many great memories of music and musicians there, and getting to know the community. I’m still inspired by experiences like hearing Tito Puente at Discover Jazz, Dave Brubeck in Rutland, the Basie Band outside at Pico, trumpeter Dave Ellis at Killington, and catching Billy Comstock (Sr), Ace Leonard, and Pete Giancola around town. I even heard the JGB at a wedding up north! I’m honored to have been a small part of the scene over the years, playing Radio Bean, sitting-in with Sandra Wright, late nights in Burlington, Mojazz in Wilmington, Pink’s in Manchester, 51 in Middlebury, playing on the Killington Access Road with Joey Leone, or Center Street Alley with Steve Audsley. One of my most memorable gigs was indoors at the Shrewsbury Library with Muddy Rhodes (Tom "Bout Right" Mitchell, Dirk "Blind Boy" Thomas, Paul "Thudd" Sgalia, and Mark "Catfish" Hamilton). It was hot, and the bookshelves must have been pushed to the sides of the room, because people were dancing!”
