I’m convinced DJs develop some kind of sixth sense after doing this long enough. 😂🔮

This girl was walking up to request Cotton Eye Joe at prom.

What she didn’t know?

I had LITERALLY just started mixing into it from Party Rock Anthem as she was approaching the booth.

She asks McRay about the song.

I tell her it’s already playing.

And then my favorite part…

Watching her walk away and waiting to see if she actually realizes the song she just requested is coming in.

Sure enough…

SHE GETS IT. 😂🙌

I swear this happens more often than you’d think.

Someone walks up to request a song that’s already loaded, already cued, or sometimes literally playing.

After enough years of reading dance floors, you start getting pretty good at anticipating what people want to hear.

And sometimes the timing is just ridiculously perfect.

So I’m officially calling this a series.

15,000 FOLLOWERS ON FACEBOOK. 🤯❤️

What in the world?!

I crossed that milestone over the weekend, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.

The growth this page has experienced over the last couple of years has been absolutely WILD.

Millions upon millions of views.

Thousands of shares.

Hundreds of comments.

And somehow, 15,000 people who have decided they want to see more of whatever it is I’m doing over here. 😂

I know social media isn’t everything.

Followers don’t automatically equal success. Views don’t necessarily translate into dollars. And there are plenty of things in life that matter a whole lot more than how many people watch a video on their phone.

I get all of that.

But here’s what I also know.

Behind all those views are REAL people.

Real weddings.

Real celebrations.

Real moments.

Couples experiencing one of the biggest days of their lives.

High school kids making memories at prom and homecoming.

Friends getting together for a random night out.

Families celebrating milestones.

People of all ages singing, dancing, laughing, and just enjoying being together.

That’s what I’m sharing.

These aren’t moments created for social media. They’re moments happening in real life that I have the privilege of being part of.

And somehow, sharing little pieces of those experiences has connected me with people all over the place.

I’ve booked events because of social media.

I’ve met incredible people.

I’ve reconnected with old friends and clients.

I’ve networked with DJs and music lovers from around the world in real life and behind the screen because of social media.

And I’ve watched videos of people celebrating in little towns in Northwest Iowa reach MILLIONS of people who have probably never even heard of those towns. 😂

That’s pretty freaking cool.

Has every part of social media been positive?

Of course not.

There are rude comments. Weird interactions. Posts that go absolutely “nowhere.” And plenty of moments where I wonder why I spend so much time doing this. 😂

But overwhelmingly?

It’s been a blessing.

I’m proud of what I’ve built, but I’m also incredibly grateful for the people who have made it possible.

The couples who trust me with their weddings.

The schools and organizations that invite me to their events.

The people who show up ready to dance.

The friends, family, and clients who share my stuff.

And everybody who follows along, whether we’ve met in person or not.

I don’t take any of it for granted.

At the end of the day, I’m still just a guy in Northwest Iowa who loves music, loves people, and gets to help create some pretty incredible memories.

The fact that 15,000 of you want to follow along with that?

Man. That’s humbling.

Somehow there are STILL things I’ve never seen before. 😂

Like a T-SHIRT CANNON.

At a WEDDING. 💀😂

This thing made a surprise appearance at Madelyn & Carson’s reception, and apparently we’re just turning wedding receptions into sporting events now.

And you know what?

I’m here for it. 😂🙌

One of my favorite things about weddings is seeing the random, creative, sometimes completely ridiculous things people come up with to make their celebration their OWN.

Not every wedding needs to look like the last one.

Sometimes it’s a beautiful first dance.

Sometimes it’s a meaningful family moment.

And sometimes the father of the bride starts launching T-shirts across the dance floor. 🚀😂 These shirts were personalized for the wedding day btw. So cool! My one regret is not getting one for myself. 😭

Keep making your weddings YOUR weddings.

A T-shirt cannon, a harmonica, and late-night McDonald’s. 😂 What a night celebrating Mr. & Mrs. Morris! 🥳

Madelyn and Carson had quite the adventure getting to their wedding day. TWO reception venues canceled on them during the planning process! 😳 But they rolled with the punches, and man, did it all come together!

We kicked things off with a beautiful October ceremony on the stage in Arnolds Park overlooking the lake. The weather was gorgeous, but the WIND! 💨 I spent the entire ceremony holding my laptop on its stand so it wouldn’t go flying. 😂 On the bright side, no bugs! I’ll take that trade.

Then it was over to the Lake Okoboji Conference Center (formerly Arrowwood) where the party was ON!

Fantastic pasta bar, great speeches, and a dance floor full of energy! We bounced to everything from yacht house to 2010s party anthems to even some classic Eminem. 🔥

And the surprises kept coming! Madelyn’s dad busted out a T-SHIRT CANNON and started launching shirts into the crowd. Carson and Madelyn joined in on the fun chucking some too. 😂 Then, during our final song, he pulled out a harmonica and played along to Piano Man! Two things I don’t think I’ve EVER seen at a wedding before!

Oh, and late-night McDonald’s?! 🍟 Genius. Although by the time I finished tearing down, guests had cleaned it ALL out. Clearly a hit. 😂

Had Parker Kamstra along with me for this one too, and it was great getting him back out to experience another wedding and see firsthand how no two celebrations are ever the same. And it’s always great to work with Kenzie | Sioux Falls Wedding & Portrait Photographer

Madelyn and Carson, after everything you went through to get here, I hope this night was everything you hoped it would be. I had a blast. Thank you so much for trusting me to be part of it!

“Where did the name Stovetop come from?”

A question I’ve been asked approximately 47,000 times over the years. 😂

And the answer is actually pretty simple.

High school basketball.

Yep. That’s it. 🏀😂

If you don’t know, my name is Lee STOVER (yes, like Russel 😏😂)I was a freshman at Adrian High School, practicing with some of the older varsity guys, when one day somebody randomly started calling me “Stovetop.”

And for whatever reason…it STUCK.

Through high school.

Through college.

Eventually it became my artist name when I started making and releasing my own music. (Yes, you can find Stovetop on Spotify. 😏🎶)

And when it came time to name my DJ business?

Stovetop Productions.

Why mess with a good thing? 😂

So shoutout to some of those Adrian Dragons from the Class of ’03! Pete Hohn, Dusty Spieker, Dusty Henning, Cliff Lynn, and the rest of those guys.

I think Pete said it first, but man you probably had NO idea that some random nickname you gave a freshman at basketball practice would follow him for the next two decades.

And eventually make him money. 😂💰

It’s funny how nicknames work.

Some have a great story behind them. Some make absolutely no sense. Some you love. Some you spend your entire life trying to get rid of.

And then there’s me.

A grown man with a wife, four kids, and a business who still goes by a nickname somebody gave him when he was 14. 😂

But I dig it.

It’s unique. It’s memorable. And at this point, I can’t imagine calling the business anything else.

So there you have it.

Nickelback into Chris Brown.

Because apparently that’s where my brain goes when I’m DJing. 😂

Rockstar into Look at Me Now.

Two songs that have absolutely no business being anywhere near each other.

And yet…

I LOVE how this works. 😮‍💨🔥

That moment when the Look at Me Now beat starts creeping in underneath the Rockstar vocals is my favorite part.

You can hear the direction changing before Nickelback is even finished.

And then suddenly we’re somewhere completely different. 😂

That’s one of my favorite things about open format mixing.

Taking songs from different genres, different eras, different worlds, and finding a way to connect them.

Sometimes it’s smooth. Sometimes it’s ridiculous.

And sometimes it’s a little bit of both.

This one was FUN. 🎧🙌

I LOVE requests.

Seriously.

Come talk to me. Tell me what you want to hear. Give me a song. Give me an artist. Tell me what your friends are into.

That information helps me do my job.

This, however…

Is not a request. 😂

She didn’t ask me to play a song.

She didn’t say, “Hey, could you play something different?”

She stood in front of the stage, yelled “PLAY BETTER MUSIC,” gave me a thumbs down, hit me with a “laaaame,” and walked away. 😂

Meanwhile…

Look behind her.

Almost the ENTIRE room is doing the Wobble.

And listen, I get it.

Line dances aren’t for everybody.

If the Wobble isn’t your thing, that’s totally fine. You don’t have to like every song I play.

But here’s the good news…

It doesn’t last forever. 😂

Give me a few minutes and we’ll be somewhere completely different.

Or even better…

ACTUALLY REQUEST A SONG.

Give me something useful! 😂

Tell me what you DO want to hear instead of standing in front of me yelling that I need to “play better music.”

Because one person’s opinion doesn’t outweigh what the rest of the room is telling me either.

If the dance floor is empty and you tell me the music isn’t working…

I might need to listen. 😂

If you’re giving me a thumbs down while almost everybody behind you is dancing…

I’m probably going to trust the people dancing.

So please, request songs!

I genuinely want to know what you want to hear.

Just remember there’s a human being standing on the other side of the DJ booth.

I got a DJ compliment this weekend that I get every so often. But it’s not something DJs normally hear a lot…

A guy came up to me during the dance and said something along the lines of…

“I have to compliment you on your volume. It’s not often I can go to a party and still have a conversation off the dance floor while staying in the room.”

I LOVED that.

Because volume is something DJs probably don’t talk about enough.

On the dance floor?

I want it LOUD.

I want you to feel the music. I want people singing, dancing, yelling, and completely losing themselves in the party.

But 50 feet away?

It doesn’t necessarily need to feel the same.

Not everybody at a wedding is there to spend four straight hours on the dance floor.

People are catching up with family they haven’t seen in forever.

Old friends are reconnecting.

Grandparents are visiting.

People are meeting each other for the first time.

Those conversations are part of the celebration too.

A DJ isn’t only responsible for the atmosphere ON the dance floor.

We affect the atmosphere in the entire room.

So yes, I want the dance floor rocking.

But if I can give the people dancing the volume and energy they want while still allowing somebody across the room to have a conversation without screaming into someone’s ear?

That’s a win.

Louder isn’t always better.

The RIGHT volume in the RIGHT place is better. 🎧🙌
