In 1975, a trip to the grocery store looked a whole lot different than it does today.

Everyday staples like milk, bread, and eggs were commonly priced in cents. Meat, coffee, and produce all carried price tags that can look almost unbelievable more than 50 years later.

But here's the part that's easy to forget: Americans also earned considerably less in 1975. The median household income was around $11,800 a year. So those prices weren't nearly as cheap to families then as they appear to us today.

Still, the contrast is striking. A cart filled with everyday basics in 1975 could ring up for a fraction of the dollar amount we're accustomed to seeing now. And in just the last four years alone, grocery prices have risen more than 20%.

More than 50 years later, both grocery stores and the numbers on the receipt have changed dramatically.
