The phrase "dead as a doornail" dates back to at least the 1300s, making it more than 700 years old. A doornail was a large iron nail driven through thick wooden doors. The tip was hammered flat (called clinching) on the other side, making it impossible to remove and reuse. Because a clinched nail couldn't be used again, it was considered "dead," giving rise to the expression. Today, the phrase simply means completely dead or no longer working.
