Miriam, women, beauty as strength and survival
At our seder table, we now have a special floral arrangement to honor Miriam and the women's essential role in the exodus story and the story of our people - and all of humanity - at its most distilled.
It was they who ensured survival and freedom by believing in it wildly and radically, without hesitation or bargaining, with utter hope and prophetic foresight.
With a unique connection to the divine, the women knew that beauty and music and art are not only as essential as bread and water, but are the very foundation of a meaningful and spiritually connected life, of eyes and heart that are able to perceive and celebrate that which is most holy.
In celebration of the divine feminine, and with our humble, awe-struck hearts reaching out to the majestic and unbelievably brave women of Persia (Iran), of Israel, and of every corner of this battered world, we remember that freedom rests on the shoulders - and in the hair, and in the breasts - of the sacred femininity all around us.
