The Great Smoky Mountains Ghost Towns Road Trip takes you to seven forgotten towns across Tennessee and North Carolina. Each stop has its own past and a few spooky reminders of the people who once lived there. At Sugarlands, you can hike to the stone Rock House ruins and the old cemetery. In Elkmont, walk by empty vacation cabins left behind after the old resort days faded. Cataloochee Valley still has quiet churches, a school, and a few family homes. Little Greenbrier has a well-kept one-room schoolhouse and a hillside cemetery. In Proctor, way out in the backcountry, you’ll find the remains of a busy logging town. Cades Cove is full of old homes, churches, and graveyards from an early mountain community. And at Lost Cove, high above the Nolichucky River, you can still see falling homes and rusty cars from a town left empty since the 1950s!
