FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Practical Solutions for Forage Shortages at the Tri-County Livestock and Forage Conference
Seneca, MO – In recent years, livestock producers across the region have faced significant challenges caused by drought conditions. These dry spells have left many forage stands thin and less productive, limiting the farm’s feed resources and increasing costs for producers. As a result, many farmers are seeking practical, research-backed strategies to rebuild their forage systems, improve soil health, and secure reliable feed sources for their livestock.
The Tri-County Livestock and Forage Conference, scheduled for Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the 2S Angus Cattle Company in Seneca, Missouri, aims to address these pressing issues. Hosted by MU Extension and Soil and Water Conservation District Boards, this free event will bring together agricultural experts to provide actionable solutions to help producers navigate these challenges.
The evening will feature two key presentations. MU Extension Agronomist Tim Schnakenberg will present Rebuilding the Forage Base, offering practical advice on how to restore and maintain healthy, productive forage systems. Meanwhile, Natural Resource Conservation Agent Drexel Atkisson will lead a session on Cover Crop Grazing on Crop Land, highlighting how cover crops can serve as an alternative feed source while simultaneously improving soil health.
Attendees will not only gain valuable knowledge but will also have the opportunity to network with fellow producers and industry specialists. A complimentary smoked meat dinner, provided through the generous support of 2S Angus Cattle Company, Joplin Regional Stockyards, Farmers Cooperative Association, Heritage Tractor, Specialty Risk Insurance, and many others, will be served at 5:45 PM, with doors opening at 5:30 PM. The program officially begins at 6:00 PM and will conclude with a door prize drawing (must be present to win).
"The Tri-County Livestock and Forage Conference is designed to address the real-world challenges our producers are facing," said Jennifer Lutes, MU Extension Agriculture Business Specialist. "With thinning forage stands and the increasing need for alternative feed solutions, this conference provides practical tools and knowledge producers can immediately apply to their operations."
This event is free to attend, however participants need to registration to secure their meal by February 9, 2025. To register, visit https://extension.missouri.edu/events/tri-county-livestock-forage-conference-1 or contact the McDonald County Extension Office at 417-223-4775.
