Sonka Guest House History

This Majestic home sits on a gorgeous 1-acre estate close to the city center and is teaming with history.

Czechoslovakian immigrant, Joseph Sonka came to Seguin in 1878. A stonemason by trade, he established a brick yard and cotton gin near this site in 1881 began construction of this house, he completed it in 1893, the same year he married Annie Klickca.

Made of bricks from the Sonka brick yard, the house is built on an L-plane with Italianate detailing. The house is solid brick with a 1099 sq. ft. cellar, the interior of the house has 12 ft. ceilings, approximately 1 ft. thick plaster walls, 9' walk through windows, pine floors, with transom windows above the doorways, and hand-crafted woodwork on front porch balcony. The house was the first house in Seguin to have an indoor bathroom.

It served as a community hospital from 1913 to 1915.
