May is when dahlias truly shine in Central Florida ✨

Our season comes early here, and it’s beautiful but fleeting. The long hot days and warm nights of summer are already around the corner, so these blooms only stay with us for a short window each year.

Feeling especially appreciative of the season right now and all the beauty packed into these few weeks.

Spring, lately 🌸

The dahlias have officially taken over, and I’m not mad about it. There’s just something about them that feels a little extra magical this time of year… the layered petals, glowing colors, and no two blooms exactly the same.

Fun dahlia facts, because I can’t help myself:
• They’re the national flower of Mexico
• Their stems are hollow (like a straw!), which is why they drink so much water once cut
• They come in almost every color except true blue
• And they grow from tubers… basically like a potato underground that turns into all of this

There’s something kind of wild about that, something so simple below the soil creating blooms this intricate and full of life above it.

Grateful for a yard full of spring color and a chance to slow down and enjoy it 💛

Sebastian/Vero Beach locals, hi! I’m Elyse 👋
Midwest-grown, now in my first season growing in Florida and adapting as I go 🌸

Limited quantities for now, mostly dahlias as the spring season winds down and I start flipping beds for summer and fall. Starting small, but working toward more and expanding later this year.

Florists looking for premium local stems, feel free to DM me 💐

It’s April, and dahlias are already blooming here in Sebastian, Florida 🌸

In most parts of the country, dahlias don’t make their appearance until late summer or even early fall—but down here, we’re on a completely different schedule. Our mild winters and early spring warmth give these beauties a head start, making spring bloom season feel like a little secret.

Dahlias actually originated in Mexico, so they love warmth—but not the intense, relentless heat that Florida brings later in summer. That’s why, this window right now? It’s kind of magic.

With thousands of named varieties—from soft, romantic pastels to bold, sunset tones—no two feel exactly the same. And because they have a relatively short vase life compared to other flowers, they’re not often shipped long distances. Which makes locally grown dahlias even more special.

A fleeting, seasonal luxury… right here in our backyard 💐

First spring growing in Sebastian, FL, Zone 10a 🌿

We had a historic freeze just to keep things interesting, but the cool season annuals were unfazed. 😉

Snaps are budding up, dianthus are producing beautifully, and the poppies are reminding me that every climate has its quirks.

New soil. New pests. New timing.
Still finding my footing — but we’re getting there.

The fall zinnia and sunflower trials were mostly a success! 🌻✨

I’ve figured out the main pests we’re dealing with here in Florida, dialed in the soil for better nutrients and drainage, and even adjusted bed placement based on how the sun actually moves across this yard.

But zinnias and sunflowers were just the warm-up. Now it’s time for the real stars: dahlias, cool-season fillers, and the full winter garden plan. Big things ahead for Pelican Petal Co! 🌿💐

Hi there, flower friends!
I’m so glad you found your way here. 🌸✨

Since this Florida summer hasn’t given me many blooms to share, I thought I’d take a minute to introduce myself and share a bit about my flower journey — which has taken quite the unexpected turn this year!

👇 Let’s rewind…

Last year I was growing armfuls of flowers in Northwest Indiana and planning a BIG season for 2025.
Then… we made the decision to move (back) to Florida! 💃🌴

I’m a little sad about the blooms I’m missing this summer — but I’m not sad about being back in Florida. I’ve always loved it here, and I’m so happy to be home again.

☀️ Of course, starting over in the heat of summer means no garden beds (yet) — and it’s definitely too hot to plant.
Florida fall is like the Midwest’s spring — our main growing season starts in October and runs through May/June before we take a summer break from the heat and pests.

Right now, I’m in prep mode — building raised beds, planning crop schedules, and dreaming of flowers.
Here’s what I’m planting first:

🌸 Dahlias
🌼 Snapdragons
🌸 Poppies
🌿 Feverfew
💗 Dianthus

Then from February through April, I’ll move into summer crops like:

🌻 Zinnias
🌾 Cosmos
🌞 Sunflowers
🔥 Celosia
🍭 Gomphrena
🌿 Amaranth

Things grow a little differently down here, but most flowers will thrive if you plant them at the right time. (Even if I had to say goodbye to peonies and lilacs — don’t get me started 🥲)

🌱 While I’m not a hobby grower, I am in a season of rebuilding. I like to call this R&D: research & development 📈🤓 My hope is to have flowers available locally starting in Spring 2026, depending on how this first season unfolds.

If you’re seeing fresh flowers on my feed and you’re local — feel free to message me!
And if you’re a fellow grower, I’d love to connect — I know so many of you have walked through big transitions, too.

Have you ever started over in a new zone? What helped you settle in again? 💬
