We had lots of fun at our May Member Meeting last night at Leif Erikson Hall!

A presentation was given about the history of the Norwegian Constitution, which is what Syttende Mai (17th of May) celebrations are all about! At the end of the presentation, we all sang "Ja, vi elsker dette landet", the national anthem of Norway. πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄

We hope to see everyone having fun at our Open House this Sunday from 12-4:30 PM, our very own celebration for Syttende Mai! Afterwards you can see us marching in the parade.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Happy Labor Day/International Workers Day from Leif Erikson Lodge! πŸ‘·πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨β€πŸ

The celebration of this day has its origins in the United States. What began on May 1, 1886, as a peaceful demonstration for the eight-hour workday ended in tragedy on May 4, with many deaths among both demonstrators and police forces. To mark this, and to continue demonstrating for the eight-hour workday, the American Federation of Labor organized a general strike on May 1, 1890.

Norway was one of many countries that has observed Labor Day (arbeidernes dag) since 1890. Since 1947, the day has been a public holiday and a statutory day off in Norway.

While we don't celebrate Labor Day on May 1 in the same way as in Norway, we do celebrate Syttende Mai, Norwegian Constitution Day on the 17th of May like they do! Scroll through our photos to see pictures from previous celebrations, including our Open House and the 17th of May Parade! πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄
