God jonsok!

Although Sweden celebrates their Midsummer (the more famous celebration) on the first Friday after the summer solstice, Norwegians celebrates jonsok (or sankthans) on June 24. The celebrations are usually held the evening before on the 23rd, also known as sankthansaften!

How is sankthansaften celebrated today? Usually outside with others, sharing a meal, and watching a big bonfire together. Norway Park had a big bonfire at their Sankt Hans celebration on June 13 this year!

Did you know that June 7 has a special place in Norway's history? 🇳🇴

June 7, 1905, the referendum on the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden was a defining moment in Norwegian history. Following a conflict with Sweden over issues including foreign policy, the Storting voted to dissolve the union. Today, June 7 is known as Unionsoppløsningen (union dissolution) day in Norway and is a flag flying day. Sometimes referred to as Norway's Independence Day.

June 7, 1940 was also the date that King Haakon VII and the royal family had to leave the country after escaping the German forces during the World War II invasion of Norway.

June 7, 1945 is coincidentally also the date in which King Haakon VII returned after 5 years of exile in London.

Today is our last First Saturday Kaffestua until September! During the months of July and August, there will be no First Saturday Kaffestua because our volunteers take a much deserved break.

Enjoy heart-shaped waffles, open-face sandwiches, dessert, and coffee for just $9, and possibly accompanied by live accordion music! 🎶

It’s also your last chance to visit the library on a Saturday until September—so swing by, savor some treats, and check out some books while you’re here! 📖

See you for lunch! 🥳

Join us on June 10 for our last dinner and meeting until September! Every June member meeting we reduce our dinner cost to $10 for a light meal and beverage. Dinner will be prepared by the Cultural Committee, headed by our Cultural Director Sheila Bartenen, and will include charcuterie board, pasta salad, green salad, breads, Kringle, and cake.

The program will mark the 40th anniversary of Leif Erikson Hall, and we will introduce several of our members who helped build it. Christine Anderson, our lodge Historian and who was there when the Hall was being built, will give a presentation about the history and process of building it!

We will also have a short presentation before our business meeting by Karen Schaefer, who will share information about her recent 2-week trip to Norway, sponsored by the Norwegian Vesterheim Museum. Karen is a lodge and Leikarringen member, as well as a skilled bunad maker and seamstress.

RSVP by noon on Monday, June 8, by calling the lodge at 206-783-1274 or emailing [email protected].
