Painting the Figure from Photographs

Ted Nuttall

October 27 - 31

Although painting a person in watercolor may seem daunting, it is every bit as approachable as creating a still life or landscape. Ted Nuttall will demonstrate the techniques and instill the confidence to enjoy painting people. Ted will discuss the benefits of photographic reference, as well as how to interpret a photo in order to give life and energy to the subject. In Ted’s daily demonstrations and presentations, he will share his personal approach to painting. Plus, he will introduce the work of other artists with the objective of inspiring enriched seeing and thinking skills. What’s more, significant time is allowed for one-on-one instruction. In an atmosphere that’s both creative and supportive, Ted encourages in each participant a renewed enthusiasm for his or her art – regardless of their skill level.

Alla-Prima Head Study

Clayton J. Beck III

October 27 - 30

With excitement, we welcome Illinois painter, Clayton J. Beck III, for this painting workshop. Clayton calls himself a “Realist Impressionist” as a way of identifying the subjects and style of painting that interest him. His aim is to show the story behind what often appears to be an ordinary scene. Clayton will help students find spontaneity, excitement and a greater comfort level while painting. Students will find answers to questions like: What do I choose? How do I start a painting? When should I stop? Should I take photos? Students will learn about harmony in composition, the colors of light, Alla Prima lay-it-and-leave-it brushwork, and the beauty of restraint. The techniques of John Singer Sargent, Antonio Mancini and Richard Schmid will be explored. This class is suitable for the confident beginner through advanced painter. Bring an open attitude, be ready to try new things and come to enjoy being with kindred spirits.

Portrait and Figure Painting

Derek Harrison

October 27 - 30

The focus of this workshop will be the construction of highly real, yet loose and poetic portrait and figure paintings utilizing live models, plein air studies, photo reference and digital editing. The class will cover a variety of approaches related to portrait and figure painting. Derek is a “classically trained realist.” He spent years working primarily from live models on location and in studio to develop his paintings. Although he still works from life, he has also embraced technology and how it can assist with his process. When applied as a tool, photography and digital editing can vastly enhance your artistic process. We will cover how to light the scene and model in order to achieve a specific mood and/or narrative, pull elements from plein air sketches, and shoot reference photos. Students will learn how to manipulate these images using procreate or similar editing programs. Color, drawing, brushwork and texture, layering, direct and indirect approaches will be covered in depth. Participants will work from both life and photos shot during class. iPad or iMac recommended.
