The Art of Observation with John Schieffer

Learn the design techniques and photography approach behind creating a fresh, contemporary still life! In this 4-day workshop, you’ll discover what makes a good still life and how to create an oil painting that most closely captures your vision. John Schieffer will share painting methods he’s found essential over the years, covering board surface prep, drawing techniques and materials, the importance of values and color, designing a still life and composing with light, and key painting techniques.

In his own words: “To create thought provoking art that is both pleasing to the eye and the mind… For my own work I often choose to paint those things that I think should be given a second glance, ordinary things that come alive when you shine a light on them. Each painting has its own life and meaning… the reason I started it remains always the same - to make something beautiful and express strong emotional content, to share with others the way I see the world and objects of life.”

Animal Art: Beyond Realism with Julie T. Chapman

Ready to push past conventional realism in your animal art? Join disrupted-realist artist Julie T. Chapman for four days of challenging yourself to step outside traditional boundaries.

*Students should have a good foundation in drawing and values.

Focus areas include:
🎯 The 5 fundamentals of every piece (and how to use them for self-critique)
🎯 How to go beyond straightforward depiction
🎯 Asking yourself what you want to express
🎯 Using tools like Procreate and Lightroom to help visualize your work
🎯 Experimentation to stretch your creative boundaries

Julie T. Chapman is a Montana-based artist with an abiding love of the modern American West. She works primarily in paint and scratchboard, with a mission to share her wonder at the beauty and sentience of the animal nations we share this planet with. Since 2010, she has worked predominantly in scratchboard and has helped pioneer its acceptance as a fine-art medium. Beginning in 2019, her painting process evolved into a “disrupted realism” style, where subjects are fragmented and the outcome of each piece is unknown at the start — a journey involving abstraction, drawing, scraping, and re-working, all in search of “the right amount of not enough.” The fragmented quality of her work is her response to the chaos and intolerance present in our social, political, and natural environments, intended to confront viewers and spur self-reflection.

Extended Studies: Studio Painting & Drawing with Michael Little

Ready to take your skills beyond the basics? This observationally-based course is designed to reinforce and deepen your drawing and painting fundamentals, working across still-life, portrait, and figure subjects.

Students will draw from direct observation as well as photographic source material, with plenty of room to experiment with scale, subject matter, and media — using art as a tool for invention, conceptualization, and idea development. This extended format also gives students the chance to explore materials in greater breadth and depth than a typical class.

Taught by Michael Little, who holds a BFA in drawing and printmaking and an MFA in painting from the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island School of Design, and Cooper Union. Mike has continued to grow and evolve through numerous workshops and classes at Scottsdale Artists’ School, and believes strong drawing skills are the foundation for everything — with every artist’s unique style and voice emerging through practice and intuition.

Painterly Still Life & Floral Painting with Jared Brady

Explore bold alla prima still life techniques while strengthening your core painting skills! Join us this November for a four-day workshop devoted to still life and floral painting, featuring hands-on instruction and live demonstrations.

Students will work closely on fundamental skills, composition, and painterly brushwork, learning to arrange and paint from observation — combining form, texture, and color into compelling paintings with real visual flow. Along the way, you’ll pick up practical strategies for handling tricky materials and building work that feels bold, loose, and full of life.

*Previous drawing and painting experience is very helpful.

Jared Brady (b. 1998) currently resides in Colorado and is a representational artist working mainly in oils. He was introduced to oil painting and the representational art world at age 16 by artist Ken Shanika, and has since dedicated his time to honing his craft, continuing his education through workshops with artists including Quang Ho and Daniel Keys. In his own words: “There is beauty everywhere I look. The same visual concepts that excite me in a grand landscape can also be found in a simple still life.”

Landscape Painting in the Studio with Calvin Liang

Learn how to transform a photo reference into a compelling studio painting! Calvin will kick things off with a slideshow demonstrating how he uses photo references in his own work, followed by a demonstration, then one-on-one time with each student throughout the rest of the day. Students will spend the workshop working on a single studio painting based on their own photo references (bring a laptop or tablet, or have color prints made at the school).

Lessons will cover: planning an effective composition based on the artist’s intentions and reference material; better seeing and using warm and cool color in a landscape; commanding hard and soft edges to create a sense of space; simplifying subject matter through basic design, value, color, and drawing skills; and getting the best possible results in a short amount of time.

Calvin Liang was born in Canton, China, began painting in high school, and completed his art education at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, one of China’s most prestigious and competitive art academies. In China, his skills as a fine artist were applied to the theatrical industry, designing and creating sets for operas and musical dramas for the Canton Opera Institute. He moved to the United States in 1987, going on to a long and successful career creating visual art for the entertainment industry in animation, including work at Walt Disney Studios and Nickelodeon Studio on The Little Mermaid and SpongeBob SquarePants.

In 2002, Liang left his animation career to pursue fine art full-time, and has since earned wide recognition, including Master Signature Member status with Oil Painters of America and Signature Artist Member status with the California Art Club.
