Scottsdale Artists’ School also offers a premier Youth Academy program for kids ages 6-18. The School offers camps and classes where kids and teens can discover and express their vision through art! Ready to bring your own original characters to life? In this story telling workshop for young adults, you'll learn how to convey information with imagery, color, and illustration techniques. The class covers the basics of page design, selecting colors, and creating symbols that add emotion and impact to a story. The big focus: using color, illustration, and marker rendering to create unique and original characters!

Supplies are included!
Your instructor, Devon Meyer, is an artist constantly inspired by nature, from the elaborate patterns and gorgeous colors of plants, birds, and flowers. Watercolor is her initial medium, but she also works in oil, charcoal, pen and ink, and colored pencil. She celebrates the favorite themes and styles of youth artists, blending genres like cartooning, anime, and manga with practical tools like technique, proportion, skill building, symbolism, and color theory. Her work has been shown at Audubon Phoenix and in art shows around the Valley, and she has taught art to both children and adults in Arizona, Idaho, and Wyoming.

Ever wanted to learn how to paint but felt nervous about joining a class full of people who've been at it for years? Or maybe you've dabbled and worry you started off on the wrong foot? This class is for you! Oil Painting 101 goes through the fundamentals to solidify a foundation you can build on.

You'll learn about different brushes, mediums, and surfaces and how they affect your results. You'll try both direct and indirect painting (glazing) to see which style resonates with your artistic strengths. And working with a limited palette, you'll learn to mix colors that are truer to life and develop a color system that will propel you into the wonderful world of painting!

Your instructor, Mike Garcia, is an award winning portraitist working in graphite and oils. He studied classical drawing and painting at Matt Dickson's atelier in Tempe, Arizona, and together with Jedadiah Cracco, moderated open studios around the Metro Phoenix area, including the popular Drink & Draw at Changing Hands Bookstore. His art resides in private collections both locally and internationally, and he lives and works in Phoenix, Arizona.
