How To Crush Sales & Informational Videos
Not all of us are comfortable getting on camera. Hire any online coach, and eventually, they're going to request video content from you. Whether it's a sales video, a webinar, or even an announcement to your network, there's no avoiding getting on camera anymore. I've filmed hundreds of new marketers and the one thing that remains constant is each of us is only one type of camera personality. We each have a preferred way to deliver or speak on camera. Inexperienced coaches may tell you to jump on camera and do what it takes to get your videos done. They are right, in a way, because eventually you'll find what works for you. But wouldn't you rather do what works for you from the beginning and avoid the hours of stomach pain and awkwardness. The technique can be important, but understanding yourself can take you 80 percent of the way there. Here are the three personalities and how to set yourself up for success in front of the camera. If you can't determine which one will work for you, try all three approaches, and you'll feel it instantly. It should click right away and if not, look out for which one makes you cringe less on the playback.
First, I'd like to cover some shooting and editing tips that apply to all personalities. Be extra careful not to flip your hair or change your placement when you mess up or start a new take. Place a mark on the floor in front of you and try not to sway while you speak. The best way to make cuts when shooting yourself with a single camera is to crop in and out on each screw-up. So you'll have one shot that's a medium close-up, cut to a normal close-up, and then back to the medium close-up. That way, even if you shift from side to side a bit or mess up somewhere, it will flow well in the edit and won't look choppy. Before starting, take a couple of practice takes and then relax a bit. You'll find your delivery gets better and better with each take. As long as there's improvement, don't settle! Sometimes you'll feel like the second take is excellent, but don't stop. Take some extra "just in case" takes, and you may surprise yourself. Now onto the personalities.
The 1st Personality, The Bill O’Reilly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwxEM6b3jrk
If you're anything like Bill, you hate complicated scripts and teleprompters. This personality loves to flow off the top and is typically quick-witted in conversation. If you attempt to read a script, it may not sound the way you'd like. You'll feel it's difficult to maintain energy and enthusiasm while reading. You'll find your delivery is jumpy, and you won't get into a good flow or rhythm. There's nothing wrong with you. It's the bloody script that's the problem! When it comes to sales scripts, we like to think that it's better to memorize or read the exact offer and hook as the pros do. I know you want to read the marketing or sales copy as it's written, but if it screws up your natural cadence, it can destroy your authenticity. Regardless of what you say, no one will trust you. Some of you may be thinking, okay, fine. I'll memorize the script and deliver it perfectly! WRONG. If a Bill O'Reilly personality attempts to memorize and say something written from someone else's voice, they'll get torn apart. The solution is easier than you think.
All you have to do is place your speaking points in large font directly behind the camera somewhere. You only need the outline to make sure you do not forget something. You can look down at a notebook and cut the video in post as well. The goal is to feel confident and let it out like you're talking to a girlfriend about something exciting. It's okay if you mess up, let the mistakes out and resay the full line again if you catch yourself stuttering or forgetting what to say.
The 2nd Personality, The Rory Gilmore
The Rory Gilmore is an introvert who is softer spoken but reads quick and well. Even if you don't identify with this personality, you may still be the type that loves to use a teleprompter. Knowing exactly what to say and when to say it will relieve your nerves and make it so much easier for you to shoot your videos. Even memorizing your lines isn't as good as a teleprompter because if you're anything like the Rory's I've shot, you'll be stuck in your head trying to recall the script instead of focusing on your delivery. As soon as you work with a teleprompter, you will shine and feel an instant release of energy, and a star will be born! If you're not tech savvy, don't worry at all. New, user-friendly apps and simple setup teleprompters have made this more straightforward than ever before. If you find yourself struggling with any teleprompters, don't hesitate to reach out and ask me. I'll hook you up with the perfect setup for you! If the other two methods don't work for you, be sure to give teleprompters a try. I've seen the most nervous and sweaty people switch it on instantly with the words scrolling by on the screen in front of them.
Here are some additional tips for teleprompting. Be sure to write in your voice and immediately change anything that doesn't feel right. Try reading it out loud as you're writing. This way, you can confirm each line flows smoothly and rephrase any lines you have to say multiple times to get right. One of the most crucial technical aspects you must get right with a teleprompter is the speed. It must match the rate at which you speak because if it's too fast or too slow, it will not feel genuine to the audience. Remember to enunciate your words well if you're a fast talker and resay any messed up lines immediately without moving. Some apps can listen and move the words as you read them, but I haven't found a good one yet, so I set the teleprompter app to my natural speed and put extra spacing between the lines where I'ts too fast. Try it a few times, and you'll quickly find what works best for you.
The 3rd Personality - The Diamond
Pressure makes diamonds. The final personality is the rarest of the three, but it exists amongst many teachers and content creators. If you try both of the above and nothing seems to work for you, it most likely means you're a diamond. A diamond doesn't like knowing there are more chances to shoot better. Just knowing there are multiple chances ruins almost every take for a diamond. From the moment they hit record, all they're thinking about is what's NOT working. Being stuck in their heads, they can never deliver what they want to say the right way because of either perfectionism and overthinking. You're going to resist the solution at first but once you realize you're a diamond there's no turning back. You're going to make amazing videos consistently, all in one take because that's all you're going to give yourself. You're going to record all of your videos LIVE! That's right; you have one chance! One of my favorite coaches, Chad Thibodeaux is a diamond, and you won't believe how many times we've tried shooting courses just to stream the entire thing live to a private group and then pulling out the footage in post for the final courses. Once diamonds build the courage to go live, there's nothing that can stop them. They will have tons of content to distribute and repurpose. For a diamond, I recommend they hire a fantastic editing team for distribution like from contentdreamteam.com . Publishing to the masses will be fun, and easy for you. The best part is you'll outperform every other personality if you build your content team!
