Moe’s summer reading list is off to a rock-solid start 📚🦎📚She gives two claws up to her debut—she says ’s write-up was iguana-credible and the ’ really nailed her good side (though she swears the camera adds 10 scales 😂). Grab a copy and turn to p. 59 for Moe’s moment in the sun ☀️

What an amazing day! I had the honor of presenting a live animal program at NCCA FFA: Vet Science Camp, a summer camp all about teaching kids the wonders of veterinary medicine! 😎

Getting to talk with curious, animal-loving campers and spark their interest in science and animal care was such a joy. The future of vet med is bright if today’s group is any indication! 🌟

Meet an introverted member of the Party Animals Atlanta crew, our beloved loggerhead musk turtle aka Lindgren Turtle🐢🐢🐢

Rescued way back in 1995 in Knoxville, Tennessee, , this little legend has been living the good life with me for 30 years and is the oldest member of our animal family.

While he’s not exactly a social butterfly (he prefers his tank solo — RIP to the tankmates who didn’t make it 🫣), one brave goldfish we named Lucky managed to beat the odds and now lives in a neighbor’s pond down the street.

Despite his loner lifestyle, kids LOVE to pet his smooth shell at programs, which is great for camouflage in the wild, and he loves the attention 💚

His aqua-terrium is about to get an overhaul, complete with a new substrate. Stay tuned for makeover updates!

Look what I stumbled across in the North Georgia mountains — the shell of an Eastern Box Turtle! Nature left behind a perfect little science lesson:

This amazing shell has two layers:
🐢The inside is bone. Yep, that’s part of the turtle’s skeleton!
🐢The outside is made of keratin, the same protein your fingernails are made of.

If you look closely at the first photo, you can see the keratinized scutes (the patterned outer plates) starting to flake off as the shell has decomposed. This process gives us a rare peek at the bone underneath.

See that ridge running down the middle of the shell in the second pic? That’s the turtle’s backbone fused to the inside. Unlike cartoons, turtles can’t crawl out of their shells. Their shell is part of their body!

🎶 Fun fact: Terrapin Station was the first album I bought when I was little…because it had two turtles on it🐢😁🐢

Meet Fatback! Our Colorado River Toad aka the Sonoran Desert Toad 🐸🌵🐸

This non-invasive amphibian is the largest toad species native to the U.S. 🇺🇸, and is built for desert life. They even have little “spades” ♠️ on their back feet, perfect for digging into the soil to stay cool and moist underground.

But don’t let that sweet face fool you—this toad is poisonous! It produces its own potent bufotoxin, a chemical defense specific to the Bufo genus that causes serious effects in predators such as vomiting, tremors and even death ☠️☠️☠️
