I am completely comfortable ( and encourage!) you to pick an appropriate reward for your kids to help keep them motivated during the session. And sometimes I'll throw out a little reward that I feel like your kids will love after I've gotten to know them a little. These sweet sisters were so excited to tell me all about their new Furby collection ( throwback!) so when they started to get a little bored with my being there, I knew the exact right reward to offer... ' When we finish getting all the photos we know Mom will love having, want to do a photo shoot with your Furbies?'. 🤣

These girls were a dream to photograph.
These furbies were the best subject matter ( and organized so nicely!)
I'd say we've got another Mission Accomplished ✔✔✔

We could meet in a local park while you're all wearing fancy coordinating clothes, and take the perfect photos of everyone smiling for the photos for your Christmas card. OR we could meet at sunset down by the waves, let the kids live their very best lives and capture some memories for your holiday card that really, truly feel like your family.

Both are good options. 😁☀

Folly or Isle of Palms? What about Sullivan's or Kiawah? Which beach is the best for family photos?!

THE ANSWER IS... THERE IS NO ANSWER!

Except for Sullivan's Island ( which does not allow photography), there isn't a beach here on the coast of South Carolina that isn't perfect for a photo session. In fact, this photo was taken on Myrtle Beach during my very first visit there!

Sand is pretty. Waves are wonderful. A dune backdrop is lovely but what really matters? That you show up with the people you love ready to relax and have some fun together.

Isn't it funny how those slightly cooler fall temps just make you want to get out and socialize?! I got this same itch when we lived in New York as the summer temps hit, but here in Charleston that oppressive heat has me doing a bit of summer hibernation. If we aren't at a pool or the beach, we aren't leaving the house. Now fall has hit... bring on the social gatherings! 🍂😁

The one piece of advice I give to every photographer whose just getting started? Photograph everyday, all the things. The first few years I stayed at home with my daughter I wasn't worried about my photography business, but I was worried about forgetting all those little memories. And now that she's 9 years old? I have completely forgotten so much of those early years. But you know what I haven't forgotten? All those technical skills I developed during those years. Now when people ask how they know I'll be able to capture their toddler I can smile knowing I navigated daily photos, in a big city, with my own toddler and trust me, photographing yours will be so much easier. 🙃🥰

Let me just, I know I talk so much about all the fun, relaxed photo we'll be capturing at your photo session, (and those are definitely my favorites!) but we will also make sure we capture the individual photo you'll want to hang to see every day, and have as a reminder of all those little details of your kiddo since they just keep growing up. Gotta have some good hero shots in the finished gallery too!

I had to stop my editing tonight to share this photo immediately. As soon as I saw it I found myself pausing to take a deep breath. The freedom of being a child on an empty beach is the stuff of meditations isn't it? That special place you can go to when you hear someone say, ' close your eyes and think of a happy place.'

A few years ago, I penned a blog post titled ' The one color I don't think you should wear to your photo session... Green'. In fact that post seemed to have caused quite the stir with a few people. have a changed my mind. Yes. I've photographed all sorts of beautiful people wearing green ( and every other color!) since I first wrote those words.

Do I still think that green can make you blend into the background in a way you might not love? Yep. I sure do.
Do I think that having a well placed green tone is the perfect solution? You betcha.

Long story short? Wear the green. Wear it proudly. But also, let's discuss what the backdrop for your photos might look like so we can help make sure the color green you choose is just perfect for your photos.
