Hi, I’m Kay Backstrom.
​I’m the floral artist behind Ström Floral Design.

After years of working in high-pressure shops where the focus was always on speed and volume, I decided to step away from that environment. I wanted to reclaim the artistry of floral design, so I opened my own private home studio—a space where I can finally slow down and treat every project with the attention it deserves.

​This shift has been incredibly liberating. Now, I personally select every stem and every design element, ensuring that each piece I create is a reflection of my experience and your unique vision.

Whether we’re designing for a wedding, a sympathy tribute, or just a beautiful arrangement for your home, my work is about creating something intentional and bespoke, not focusing on mass production or maximizing volume. My priority is, and always will be, the artistry itself.

My goal is to source stems locally whenever I can instead of supporting the big wholesalers, I want to support the local farmers in this community!

All of these gorgeous blooms have been sourced locally for a special graduation bouquet tomorrow.

Everything was picked out of the field this morning, making them the freshest that you could possibly ask for!!!

The gorgeous white stock is from Sprout And Crumb Farm and those beautiful rannunculus are from Hidden Hollow Flowers & More L.L.C., with the rest coming out of mine and a friends yard! (Thanks Cathy Hesche!)

It's all going to make a gorgeous bouquet. 😍 Stay tuned for photos tomorrow.

We went down to the farmers market in Ionia today where I spoke with Sprout And Crumb Farm about their flower farm and working with them this season. ❤️ I couldn't leave without grabbing some of their fabulous blueberry cinnamon rolls as well. I just had one and it was delicious! They are there until 2 pm today, get down there and support local buisnesses!

I don't just have flowers in my cooler, I have lots of perennials planted outside my front door and they are starting to put on a show!

We leave all of the milkweed that comes up in our yard and garden to help the Monarch butterflies! My husband is also planting a dedicated Monarch Waystation through http://www.monarchwatch.org to help them along in their journey. ❤️

In every community the way we take care of each other is important. Funeral flowers are one of the last loving gestures we can make for our loved ones. As we move past Memorial Day, I want to remind you that I am here for your sympathy and funeral floral needs.

​Honestly, this is one of my favorite aspects of floral design. I haven't shared a ton of this work, but it is a huge part of what I do. Whether you need something specific for a loved one or just need guidance on what would be best for a service, I am here to help.
