Meet The Judge Monday: Jeffrey (Jeff) Kestner

Jeff is a native Ohioan, the last of the Baby Boomer generation. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, and taught in elementary schools for 13 years. The opportunity to help other school employees led him to a career with the Ohio Education Association, the largest public employee union in the state. Representing and advocating for teachers and school employees for over 27 years, he retired from OEA in 2023.

Jeff’s introduction into the sport of purebred dogs began upon meeting his future husband, Jeff Bazell, in 2004. Bazell is a long-time breeder, exhibitor, and conformation judge. The two worked together to improve the quality and health of their Brussels Griffons. Using the registered kennel name St Johns, they bred and finished dozens of group, specialty and best in show winning dogs.

Decades of collecting and research about the Brussels Griffon breed culminated in the 2023 publication of The Definitive Brussels Griffon, and 650-page tome authored by Kestner and Bazell.

In 2018 while traveling in the UK, they fell in love with the Lancashire Heeler breed, and have imported several from Wales, Sweden and Denmark. After the breed gained full recognition by the American Kennel Club in 2024, they proudly showed their dogs to the following awards: 1st AKC Champion Dog, 1st AKC Champion Bitch, 1st Bred-by Champion, and 1st Group Placing Lancashire Heeler.

Kestner began his conformation judging career in 2016, specializing in Toy and Non-Sporting breeds. He is approved to judge the entire Toy Group.

Jeff is the father of three sons and five grandchildren.

Meet The Judge Monday: Wendy A. Corr

My involvement in dogs began in childhood with an American Eskimo, where I developed a foundation in conformation, obedience, and performance training. This early experience led to a lifelong commitment to working with and competing alongside dogs. I became actively involved with Alaskan Malamutes, successfully exhibiting in AKC conformation and performance events.

Over the years, I have owned and trained multiple Champions and performance dogs, earning titles including Utility Dog (U.D.), MACH agility titles, and numerous Working Pack Dog Excellent (WPDX) awards. Participation in the WPDX program has provided extensive experience evaluating functional structure and its relationship to breed standards under demanding real-world conditions. I have judged overseas in England, France, Czeck Republic and currently, I am working toward completing the Non Sporting Group and expanding my knowledge to many Working Breeds. In addition, I judge Junior Showmanship Judge.

Meet the Judge Monday: Jean Tremblay

I started my own obsessive journey in dogs in 1976 at a local show when our family Dane won a massive 4 point win. I had worked all summer conditioning and grooming and I was hooked. It was 10 years later as a second generation dog breeder and fifth generation stock person that my journey started in cavaliers the breed I am best know for . The Halfmoon prefix became permanent in 1994 and best in show winners bred and owned by us followed in the decades that follow in three colours as well as 91 champions in Canada and 18 AKC champions first with my late partner L.Garrett Lambert and now with my current partner Don aka The Tall one. Through a very limited breeding program we continue to work on that elusive best in show black and tan despite having won the AKC National with a veteran of that colour in 2022. I have also bred and owned champions in Great Danes, havanese, mini long hair dachshunds and smooth fox terriers.

As a handler i handled to championships and beyond, dogs from 89 different breeds and from all 7 groups. I have lost of that count of champions after a flood destroyed boxes of results and records. . I proudly trimmed, stripped, conditioned, scissored all my charges doing my best to present them as closely to what the standards required. Would I do it again ..absolutely. From starry eyed youngster, to breeder , to handler, to mentor, my journey continues as a judge with my hand still firmly involved in breeding on a smaller scale. I hope that my experience and the knowledge shared with me guides my eye and my hands in the ring.

I am now licensed for all Hounds, Toys, Non-sporting , and sporting and BIS I have had the honour of judging specialities for All hounds, Toys, Yorkies , Cavaliers, Norwegian Elkhounds and Clumbers, Toy and Standard Manchesters and Papillon,as well as Non Sporting and at All breed events in 7 provinces, the USA ,Australia and New Zealand.
