Food tells stories that words alone often cannot.

A family recipe can carry the memory of a homeland. A neighborhood restaurant can become a community’s gathering place. A lunchbox packed with unfamiliar aromas can reveal both the pain of exclusion and the pride of belonging. Across generations, food preserves traditions, fuels dreams, and creates opportunities for connection.

For the 2027 Asian American Stories Video Contest, we invite you to explore the Asian American experience through one of its most universal expressions: food.

Our Food, Our Stories: Legacy, Resilience, and the American Table is not simply about cooking or cuisine.

It is about the journeys behind every dish—the sacrifices of immigrants, the resilience of families, the dignity of work, the creativity of new generations, and the countless ways Asian Americans have enriched the cultural fabric of the United States.

Through documentary, narrative, animation, or experimental storytelling, filmmakers are challenged to answer an enduring question:



How have the flavors carried across oceans transformed not only what America eats, but how America understands itself?

This weekend, Asian American Stories youth interns participated in the Asian Food Expo.

These young people came from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and some lived far from the event venue. Yet for two days, they came together with one shared purpose: encouraging more Asian Americans to tell their stories.

Our youth interns – Ella, Kimaaya, Sophia, and Milo – from the Asian American Stories Summer Program, spent the summer learning storytelling, video production, communication, teamwork, and community engagement.

Only weeks earlier, many of them had been shy when practicing how to introduce Asian American Stories. At the Expo, something had changed.

They spoke confidently and passionately with people they had never met. They explained why Asian American Stories was created, invited community members to participate, and introduced next year’s theme: “Our Food, Our Stories.”

At the Asian American Pioneer Medal Symposium and Ceremony at Stanford University one of the most memorable moments for me was something I never expected: MIT Professor Gang Chen doing stand-up comedy about one of the darkest chapters of his life.

Behind the laughter was a painful history. Professor Chen was arrested and federally charged in 2021, and all criminal charges against him were dismissed in 2022.

What moved me was not only what happened to him, but how he tells the story today—with intelligence, humor, and remarkable grace. It takes courage to speak about suffering. Perhaps it takes an even deeper strength to one day stand on the other side of it—and make people laugh. Watch the video.

Asian American Stories Co-Chair Joel Wong reflected on the evolution of the organization’s annual themes—from “We All Belong Here,” to “My Gift to America,” then “Coming to America,” and now “Our Food, Our Stories.”

He noted that each year’s theme builds upon the last, encouraging participants to explore identity from different perspectives while preserving the rich diversity of the Asian American experience.

One of the highlights of the program was recognizing the extraordinary leadership of the student organizers.

The internship was led by Youth Leaders Elly He and Ella, together with Penny, Chair of the Asian American Stories Youth Program, and supported by Nina, Producer and Contestant Chair, who worked closely with students throughout weeks of online meetings, mentoring, and project development.

This marks the second year of the Youth Summer Internship Program.

Its origin is itself an inspiring story.

Last year, Elly was one of the winners of the Asian American Stories competition. Rather than ending her journey after receiving recognition, she proposed creating a youth internship that would give more students opportunities to develop their voices through storytelling.

Asian American Stories founders Diana Ding and Joel Wong immediately embraced the idea.

What began as one student’s vision has now grown into a thriving youth leadership initiative that is inspiring even more students to tell stories that matter.
