It's ! โ๏ธ
Belize and Guatemala share a border and Maya heritage, and that's about where the similarities end.
๐ด
Belize is small, English-speaking, and entirely water-oriented - reef, atolls, and a cave system the Maya once used as a portal to the underworld.
Guatemala goes the opposite direction: highland markets, colonial Antigua, volcanoes ringing Lake Atitlรกn that no photo does justice to.
Pair them and you get a week underwater and in the canopy, traded for cobblestones and wood smoke drifting through a highland village at dusk.
One of my favorite combinations to plan.
Real basics: Belize uses the Belize Dollar (pegged to USD, and USD works everywhere anyway). Guatemala uses the Quetzal. English in Belize, Spanish in Guatemala. Cash for markets and small towns, bottled water only, and give yourself a day or two to adjust if you're heading up to Antigua or Lake Atitlรกn โ the altitude is no joke.
Where I'd send you:
๐ก Gaia Riverlodge, San Ignacio โ your basecamp for Caracol and the ATM Cave
๐ฌ Turtle Inn by Francis Ford Coppola, Placencia โ barefoot luxury near the whale sharks at Gladden Spit
๐๏ธ Villa Bokeh & Bolontiku Boutique Hotel โ two of my favorite under-the-radar stays
Eat here: Caliente Restaurant on Ambergris Caye, Sublime in Guatemala City.
Don't skip: The Great Blue Hole, and the Maya ruins at Tikal and Caracol. Scale that photos simply cannot capture.
Which half of this trip would you do first? ๐
