'Eiming was the first person to put art, drinking, and music together in a public business in San Francisco." -- Michelle Delaney / 111 Minna Gallery

Founded by Eiming Jung, 111 Minna Gallery opened its doors at 111 Minna Street in the SoMa aka Yerba Buena District of San Francisco in 1993. This location would later become the heart of an up and coming art district, which was later solidified wit

h the construction of the SF MOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and progressive galleries in the surrounding area. With a business model focused on service and hospitality, patrons began to relish the visual aesthetics sourced from Bay Area artists, in conjunction with the laid-back atmosphere that has long been associated with 111 Minna. While acting as host for a vast variety of art, specifically focused on underground, low brow, edgy and often controversial, 111 Minna quickly became, for many artists, the San Francisco gallery to exhibit their work, gaining a reputation for launching artists’ careers, both nationally and internationally. Since 1993, 111 Minna Gallery has maintained its reputation for constant progression and positive energy, and in so doing, has become a cornerstone of San Francisco culture. We're proud to be San Francisco's melting pot of creativity, art, music, and good times.

COMING UP FOR THE JUNE ART WALK...

'HOME IN THE PRESENT'
A Solo Exhition By Nathan Foxton

Opening on Thursday, June 6th
6-10pm
At Moth Belly Gallery

912 Larkin st., SFC

Please join Moth Belly Gallery for the opening reception of "Home In The Present", a solo exhibition by Nathan Foxton () that explores the unique relationships of surrealism, collage, and nomadism to his distinctive plein-air painting practice.

"'Home In The Present' points to a reality that you can experience in the belonging of your continual moment. You don't have to wait to become something, you can have a degree of peace, of genuine engagement, of authentic connection with self and others. That’s not to write off experiences that are excruciatingly painful or uncomfortable. I think this concept is important individually and culturally because the way we embody presence impacts the reception of creativity in spaces and the capacity to deal with messiness."

-Nathan Foxton

The reception will take place from 6-10pm, as part of the Art Walk, and will then remain on view for the entirety of June, 2024. For any and all inquiries, or to be notified when this collection of work becomes available online, please feel free to DM or email us at [email protected]

Michael Kerbow is a San Francisco-based artist who works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, assemblage, and digitally manipulated photography. Kerbow received an MFA from Pratt Institute in New York. His creations explore issues such as hyper-consumerism, climate change, and other ecological threats that derive from our modern industrialized society. He is interested in how these phenomena impact our surroundings and affect the future viability of our planet. The artist seeks to question the rationale of our collective pursuits and attempts to reveal the dichotomy that can exist between what we desire and what we, in turn, manifest. Kerbow creates allegories about the world today and invites us to ponder the scenarios that possibly await us tomorrow....

“Survivors the Plague” delves into themes of resilience, transformation, and the human experience amidst adversity. Through his art, Mike Davis explores how historical narratives, particularly from medieval and Renaissance periods, resonate with contemporary challenges and societal issues. The exhibition’s overarching message is a reflection on survival, both in the face of literal plagues of the past and metaphorical ones of the present, inviting viewers to contemplate the resilience of the human spirit across time and circumstances. Davis’s work serves as a poignant reminder of our collective ability to endure, adapt, and find hope even in the darkest of times.

'REVERSAL OF FORTUNE'
A Solo Show By Michael Kerbow

This is the first time has shown with 111 Minna Gallery.

"Shortly before the pandemic, I began working on a new series of allegorical paintings that I have entitled “Late Capitalism”. This ongoing body of work portrays the return of dinosaurs as they overrun our world. These images signify our existential threat from climate change. The functioning of our society has inadvertently liberated destructive forces upon the earth. These dinosaurs are the specters of inevitable extinction. The cars and freeways symbolize our legacy of fossil fuel addiction. The various billboards and signage allude to the siren song of capitalism, and represent a culture myopically focused on hyper-commodification and consumption.

On a more personal level, this series of works are a form of nostalgia from my childhood. As a five year old, my two primary obsessions were cars and dinosaurs. These things were so cherished in my youth that it is not surprising they found their way into my artwork as an adult. However, it is worth noting that my depiction of dinosaurs is not based upon current paleoscience. Rather, I have tried to epitomize the classic illustrations of dinosaurs I remember seeing as a kid. The work of paleo-artists like Charles R. Knight, Rudolph Zallinger, and Zdeněk Burian, from the first half of the 20th century, helped foster my young imagination. Therefore, this is my way of paying homage to them."

'EXPLORATION'
A Solo Show by Michael Walsh

At Mirus Gallery

OPENING: Friday June 7th 7-10pm.
On view: June 7 - September 4, 2024

"Inspired by the rich culture of graffiti and industrial
craftsmanship, Michael Walsh’s work is a testament to diligence and expertise honed through extensive practice. This exhibition focuses on Walsh’s artist exploration, landing at his latest body of work that uses innovative technologies such as VR modeling, CAD, machine learning and 3D printing.

About the Exhibition:

Currently based in the San Francisco Bay, Michael Walsh is a versatile artist with a strong foundation in sculpture and industrial design. His art career is marked by his pioneering use of cutting-edge digital technologies and seamlessly integrating these digital manufacturing
methods into his practice. Drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of industrial craftsmanship, Michael Walsh’s artistic journey began with graffiti-style writing on the East Coast in the pre-millennium era. He
attributes the industrial landscape and painting in old steel mills and factories in Pennsylvania as the foundation for his evolution into fabricating heavy metal sculptural works and foundry.

Walsh’s sculpting is often fueled by dynamic rhythms and melody in music, transforming the fluidity and energy of sound into physical forms that embody movement and waveforms.

Over the years, Michael Walsh has surpassed conventional sculptural practices by embracing
modern digital tools of modeling in virtual reality, CAD and 3D printing. This innovative approach allows him to push the boundaries of his creative expression, merging traditional techniques with contemporary digital advancements.

In his new solo exhibition, Exploration, Michael Walsh showcases his latest body of work
featuring vibrant, 3-D printed wall hangings and sculptures designed with VR and CAD modeling
software. This collection highlights the fruits of his artistic exploration, reflecting his ability to
blend these technologies seamlessly into his creative practice...." - Mirus Gallery

MICHAEL CAMPBELL: 'THE WILDING'

Currently up at Modern Eden Gallery

May 11, 2024-June 6, 2024

[The term wilding has a great dual meaning. In a natural context, wilding can refer to the process of allowing a piece of land or an area to return to a wild, untamed state. It involves letting nature take its course without human intervention, allowing flora and fauna to grow and thrive freely. Wilding also refers to engaging in unruly, rowdy, or sometimes violent behavior, often in a group or mob setting. Michael Campbell's latest series of work will play with these dual meanings by presenting new works of sculpture and mixed media in a display sure to capture your wildest imagination!

MICHAEL CAMPBELL
Michael Campbell grew up in the Midwest in the 1970's amid the handicraft movement with a home full of macramé, decoupage, and paper-mâché. 1,600 miles away from Haight-Ashbury, he made God's eyes in Cub Scouts and glued macaroni onto wooden crosses in Sunday School. From an early age, handcrafted objects and the divine were connected.

"My work explores our connection to the mysterious fungi kingdom. I’m curious about death and what lies beyond. As decomposers of dead, organic matter, mushrooms are symbols of the imminent life and death process. They release enzymes to feed on dead, organic matter. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition; an organism that cleans and clears away dead matter and an entheogen that, when ingested, brings about transcendent states of consciousness.

I’m interested in our perception of the eternal, the divine and the otherworldly through objects that bring about an alternate mythological narrative spoken through the voice of nature. This narrative suggests, counter to Judeo-Christian teaching, that we are all connected to the natural world and its ecosystem. A new earth-centered liturgy is offered by saintly objects and altars that seem to grow from the forest floor."]

'Eiming was the first person to put art, drinking, and music together in a public business in San Francisco." -- Michelle Delaney / 111 Minna Gallery

Founded by Eiming Jung, 111 Minna Gallery opened its doors at 111 Minna Street in the Yerba Buena District of San Francisco in 1993. With the construction of the SF Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), Museum of the African Diaspora, (MoAD), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and many other galleries and arts organizations, this location would go on to become the heart of San Francisco’s art district.
