🌊 Let Joan Mitchell's "Girolata Triptych" (1963) take you to the Mediterranean coast.
In the 1960s, artist Joan Mitchell frequently vacationed in the Mediterranean + found inspiration on the island of Corsica. In particular, the small village of Girolata seized her imagination.
"Girolata Triptych" (1963) reveals Mitchell’s skilled handling of color. She captured the memory + feeling of the Corsican island town’s rocky coast. The deep green, purple + emerald call to mind the island’s flowers, earth + trees as they appear during different seasons. This is one of Mitchell’s first three-panel paintings. The work’s two strong vertical lines disrupt the traditionally horizontal presentation of landscape painting + suggest multiple perspectives.

#eatupNY
As we gear up for the #EatUpNY special this Saturday I can't help but think back on how it all started – with a local festival in Harlem to showcase some amazing local restaurants and small businesses. I'm dreaming about doing our big in-person Harlem EatUp again, but in the meantime I couldn't be happier that we've found a way to continue our mission. Please tune in on August 28th at 7pm ET on ABC7NY and join us in the celebration!

Today we are looking at Lauren Elder's "R.I.P. A lament for recently extinct species", part of the See / Change 2020 virtual exhibition.
The idea for this artwork came to Lauren when she visited Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who also designed New York City’s Central Park and much of UC Berkeley and Stanford University. Spending time in a place meant to mark the passing of humans, Lauren was taken by the wildlife which surrounded her, reminding her of the thousands of species of animals which have gone extinct in the Anthropocene.
This work consists of six pencil drawings alongside six papier-mâché grave markers created in collaboration with Vedra Alexander. Once working in public is possible again, Lauren plans to create a series of street actions in conjunction with the activist group Extinction Rebellion, activating this work. To see the rest of this series as well as other works in the See / Change 2020 exhibition, visit our website or Minnesota Street Project Adjacent Website.
