As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor Edmond Albius and his lasting impact.

Meet Edmond Albius (1829–1880), the 12-year-old visionary who forever changed vanilla cultivation. In 1841, while enslaved on the island of Réunion, Edmond invented a method to hand-pollinate vanilla orchids (Vanilla planifolia), making it possible to grow vanilla outside of Mexico. His ingenuity shaped an entire industry, yet his name remains little known.

Celebrating 45 years of the San Antonio Botanical Garden 🌺

"As we reflect on 45 years of growth, our mission remains the same—creating a space where people can connect with nature, learn about the environment, and experience the beauty of the natural world." - Katherine Trumble, CEO and President of the Garden

The Garden has long been a place for connection, discovery, and the beauty of nature.

A huge thank you to for designing our stunning anniversary logo! We’re excited for the year ahead as we continue to explore the rich history of the Garden. Swipe to see an original model of the Garden, a glimpse into its early days, and historic photos from 1976 when construction first began. 🫶🏻
