Rivercenter Mall is more than just a shopping destination along San Antonio’s River Walk. Beneath its stores and familiar pathways are layers of history, from the aftermath of the Battle of the Alamo and the changing landscape of downtown to the personal memories generations of San Antonians have created there.
As someone born in the 1980s, Rivercenter was part of my childhood. It was where my mother took me to watch movies, gather along the River Walk for the annual Christmas parade, and shop for back-to-school clothes. As I grew older, it became a place where I spent time with friends and even went on dates.
For many San Antonians, Rivercenter is a place they either avoid as a tourist destination or embrace as a part of their own memories and history. Regardless of how people feel about it today, Rivercenter remains a place layered with stories of transformation, preservation, loss, and the countless moments shared within its walls and surrounding streets.
