The Institute of CyberSecurity & Innovation - North East ISD has been more than a personal game changer for Gio Ortega.
Our cybersecurity magnet program has completely transformed his life.
“I feel like I have a running start in this industry while a lot of other people are walking. iCSI has given me opportunities I never dreamed I would have. It gave me an idea of what I wanted to do with my life.”
Gio is only 17, but he already has five CompTIA cybersecurity certifications to his name and plans to test for a sixth in the coming weeks. These are industry-standard certifications that instantly open doors for anyone dedicated enough to earn them.
One of those doors was a coveted, well-paying position at Atek Computer Repair. Gio beat out more than 100 applicants to earn the job. He believes iCSI helped seal the deal.
“I was extremely lucky to get that job at Atek. It was a tough interview process,” said Gio. “Thankfully, my resume looked really good because of everything I’ve done at iCSI.”
Cybersecurity is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks. Gio, a senior at Churchill High School, has spent two class periods a day for the past four years at iCSI soaking up all the knowledge and experience his teachers have to offer.
“We have such good teachers here and they encourage you to want to learn. Every teacher is passionate here. There’s truly a nurturing, growing environment. I’m proud to be part of it.”
When Gio graduates in 2025, he’ll be part of the first group of students who will complete the four-year magnet program. He’ll also leave iCSI with more Industry-Based Certifications (IBCs) than many college students have.
The future is bright for Gio! He plans to double major in Computer Science and Computer Engineering in college, and he’ll always have iCSI to thank for giving him the confidence and experience he needs to go after his dreams.
