Amateurs everywhere are confused as to the difference between the members of the PGA of America and the members of the PGA Tour. When a PGA professional is introduced to an amateur for the first time, the amateurs initial thought is one of wonder, wondering when this person played on the tour. Let us try to eliminate this confusion. The members of the PGA Tour, Senior Tour and LPGA Tour as well as

a variety of mini-tours are professional golfers, making their living by playing the game competitively. The members and apprentices of the PGA of America are the people who run and manage the golf industry on a day-to-day basis by using their expertise in the industry to run facilities, teach, and in general, be a leader in the golf industry.

The Utah PGA women professionals proved dominant in this year’s Goddard Cup, named in honor of Utah women’s golf pioneer Jeannie Goddard. The Utah PGA team swept across all three formats, winning by a commanding margin of 9–3.

Utah PGA keeps the cups at TalonsCove!

In today’s annual matches at TalonsCove GC, the Utah PGA women defeated their Utah Golf Association counterparts 9–3 to win the Goddard Cup, while the men’s Governor’s Cup ended in a 16–16 tie—allowing the Utah PGA squad to retain the trophy.

More than just points on the board and trophies on the shelf, these matches showcase the best of Utah golf—professionals and amateurs, men and women—competing in the spirit of tradition and competition.

Incoming BYU freshman , at 19-years old, shot 66-65-68 for a 17-under total of 199 at Riverside Country Club to become the youngest winner of the 99-year old Utah Open golf championship.

Akina becomes the second amateur in the last 10-years to win the championship following former Cougar now PGA TOUR member Patrick Fishburn’s win in 2017.

33-year old amateur Cole Ogden finished tied for second place with former Utah Valley University star Brady McKinlay, who is now a tour pro heading to the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying tournament. Also tied for second place at 15-under par was Utah PGA Associate Spencer Wallace of St. George.

Boston Bracken, a St. George amateur headed to Arizona State University golf team rounded out the top five at 14-under par.

This is the first year of the tournament’s name change with the addition of new title sponsor, the Larry H. Miller Company.

Day 1 of the Larry H. Miller Utah Open saw BYU's Simon Kwon take the lead over former champ Zach Johnson and former Utah State Am champ Cole Ogden by 1-shot.

Kwon said, “I just kind of wanted to come in...and just be super present.”

BYU Golf junior & Utah State Am runner-up Simon Kwon lit up Riverside CC this morning with a sizzling 64 to lead the morning wave of the opening round of the 99th Larry H. Miller Utah Open.

Starting on the back nine, Kwon birdied three par 5s and eagled the other on the Cougars' home course. “I just wanted to be super present… not think about the number, just the shot in front of me,” he said.

A couple late bogeys kept him from going even lower, but after the morning wave, everyone’s chasing Kwon in Provo.
