The outdoors works well for most headshots; there are still some industries like legal and banking that tend to be on a backdrop, but lots of industries that are more informal.

Having a chill 😎 “day” in my on this hot Thursday. Makes me appreciate the studio even more so that clients are comfortable in this August heat.

This morning started out with a in the morning (photos later!) then my friend, Barbara Gamm, who popped in for a headshot with Chiravuri - (filming me working).

Some behind-the-scenes (BTS) of Ginger Liemohn Creative trying out the new Kate Backdrop outdoors for headshots and some fun umbrella portraits. Instead of using a traditional backdrop stand or C-stand, I’m experimenting with using a repurposed DIY pallet stand with wheels outdoors.

I do self-portraits both as a way to create new content for my blog, newsletter, website, and socials but also to try out new setups before I photograph it with clients.

In this session it was sprinkling outside on and off so I had my NikonZ6ii and iPhone under a large patio umbrella to protect them from the rain.

I had the camera and phone on tripods with the camera on an interval setting so I had time to quickly do the next pose.

It only took a few minutes to create some content! The main idea is to not overthink it. Make sure you feel confident and comfortable about hair & makeup and that the wardrobe fits you well so you don’t end up having to Photoshop how the fabric lays on you.

I chose hot pink not because it was my branding color but because it’s a fun summer vibe! I remembered that I had two umbrellas in my Client Style Closet that would coordinate with this outfit, and the light rain inspired me to grab those.

Hey photographers! I have a tip for you! Have you seen those repurposed DIY pallets structures used for displaying photos at graduation parties? Or displaying products at craft fairs? You can use them to hold up a photo backdrop outdoors.

You can use the pop up collapsible backdrops and lean them or affix with clips. Or use cloth backdrops.

Why do headshots outside?

Because sometimes clients prefer to be outdoors for their headshot or portrait instead of inside your beautiful studio.

It’s about what the clients need, not what we want.

You can bring the indoors outdoors by providing a backdrop outdoors. Meeting clients’ needs helps ensure they are comfortable and relaxed.

Unpacking my vehicle full of takes a hot minute on this 95F degree day in for .

Setting up a portable headshot studio on location with at requires a professional setup to have the best lighting and backdrop options to wow attendees.

Many people enjoy an environmental headshot taken inside a building or stepping outside, but there are still industries who prefer or require a backdrop, like banking. So I like to bring a setup so they have choices: white, black, golden tan, and a variegated color one.

I also bring materials for a small display about how to join my email list for special offers and guidance that helps clients throughout the year!

Doing collaborations with other entrepreneurs has been beneficial in expanding my reach to new clients and testing my messaging around my services.
