The answer surprises people. In ballroom, it's a lift any time one dancer has both feet off the floor with their partner's help. Height doesn't matter. Who goes up doesn't matter.

I put together a plain-English guide: why lifts aren't allowed in ballroom and Latin competition, where they are allowed, and what to think about before adding one to a wedding first dance.

Salsa or samba? On Super Bowl Night, you'll see plenty of both.

Tonight is the first-ever Super Bowl Night on Dancing with the Stars, and eight of the 11 routines are salsa, samba or paso doble.

I wrote a quick cheat sheet so you can tell them apart while you watch: what to look for in each dance, which one is easier for beginners, and a fun Minnesota twist. (Think Prince on a rain-soaked stage and a 1992 snowman show at the Metrodome.)

Yesterday, Amy and Jerry were competing in Smooth at the Elite Dance Sport Competition in Los Angeles, but still managed to sneak away for a little lunch and California sunshine in beautiful Laguna Beach with Amy’s professional dance partner, William! 🌴

A little competition, a little relaxation, and some great memories!

🌈👠 There’s no place like the dance floor! 🌪️💃

Amy and Jerry followed the yellow brick road all the way to Los Angeles for the Elite Dancesport competition!

The two got into the Halloween spirit as Dorothy and the Scarecrow for a fun-filled, Halloween-themed Nightclub Night! 🎃

And the fun didn't stop with the costumes! 🏆 Jerry danced beautifully and brought home championship wins! Congratulations, Jerry, on a fantastic performance!

Waltz or Viennese Waltz for your first dance? Here’s how to choose:

Couples ask me this all the time. Both dances count 1-2-3, but they can feel completely different on the dance floor.

Viennese Waltz moves about twice as fast as a traditional slow Waltz and involves much more continuous turning. For many wedding couples, the slower Waltz is the easier, more relaxed choice.

But if your song is truly fast and you have room to travel, Viennese Waltz can be breathtaking.

I put together a simple 60-second test to help you figure out whether your song is actually a waltz, plus what to watch for when you see Waltz and Viennese Waltz performed on Dancing with the Stars.
