The bird of paradise is an exotic evergreen perennial native to South Africa, famous for its striking crane-like flowers and large, banana-shaped leaves. The plants grown from seed typically take 4 to 5 years to mature enough to produce their first flowers. Moving your potted plant to a sunny patio during the summer helps provide the intense light and warmth needed to trigger flowering buds.

Carnations are popular, fragrant perennial flowers known for their ruffled, colorful blooms (white, pink, red, yellow, orange) and spicy scent, often used as cut flowers and are prized for their long vase life, often lasting up to two weeks.

Fun Fact: Exam luck
Students at Oxford University traditionally wear carnations to their tests—white for the first exam, pink for the middle ones, and red for the very last one.

People often dislike carnations because they are perceived as cheap filler flowers, look dated or old-fashioned, and are associated with solemn events. However, they are inexpensive, easy to maintain, and you can get them in vibrant colors! Don't know em til you try em!

FUN FACT: They are ENTIRELY EDIBLE
