The Tara Florist Atelier Manifesto
For 2026 and Beyond
Our focus is Fresh Flowers and Design
Then and Now: How the Floral Industry Has Changed

Then

For many years, we were proud to be St. Joseph’s go-to destination for distinctive interior accessories alongside our floral work. The shop experience invited browsing, discovery, and thoughtful gift-giving, supported by steady foot traffic and a slower retail pace. It was a meaningful part of how we served our community, and one we genuinely enjoyed.

Now

While we still carry a small selection of distinctive fragrance lines, including LAFCO, the retail landscape has shifted. Much of shopping has moved online, supply costs have risen, and the economics of maintaining a broad gift assortment have changed. At the same time, expectations around floral quality, design expertise, and responsiveness have increased. Focus has become essential.

Why Focus Matters

Floral design is not a sideline—it is a discipline that requires constant attention to sourcing, seasonality, condition, technique, and timing. By narrowing our focus, we’re able to invest more deeply in flower quality, professional design standards, and client education. Focus allows for better outcomes: fresher flowers, stronger design, clearer communication, and work that reflects true expertise rather than distraction.

Our Choice

In response, we’ve chosen to concentrate primarily on flowers. By stepping away from being a general gift store, we dedicate our time, space, and resources to floral design—prioritizing craftsmanship, education, and thoughtful service. This clarity allows us to serve our clients with intention and care, grounded in what we do best.

The Flowers We’ve Left Behind for 2026—and Why

*Carnations, gladiolas, and leatherleaf—
once foundational, now gently set aside.*
'Flower Choice: 2026 vs. 1986”

Then (1986)
Carnations, gladiolas, and leatherleaf were foundational materials—durable, widely available, and visually familiar. Gladiolas provided height and ceremony; carnations offered consistency and longevity; leatherleaf supplied dependable structure. For many clients, these flowers are inseparable from memory: weddings, funerals, anniversaries, and moments marked with care. They are part of the history of floristry, and we respect the role they played.

Now (2026)
Our work today reflects a more deliberate approach. Contemporary floral design values nuance over repetition and natural movement over rigid form. As our craft has evolved, we’ve refined our inventory to focus on premium, seasonal flowers and foliages selected for beauty, performance, and expressive design.

As part of this evolution, we no longer regularly stock or use carnations, gladiolas, or leatherleaf. While each has a respected place in traditional floristry, these materials no longer align with the level of refinement, texture, and longevity that guide our work today. Stepping away from them allows us to design with greater creativity and intention—using flowers and greens that feel organic, balanced, and quietly enduring.

What has not changed is our commitment to meaning. Flowers mark life’s most human moments—celebration, gratitude, love, remembrance—and our role is to translate those emotions into form with care and expertise. When clients request traditional flowers, we remain mindful of the sentiment behind those requests and are always happy to guide them toward thoughtful alternatives that preserve meaning or special sourcing traditional flowers like carnations to meet the clients needs.

Most Frequently Asked Question…
Why do so many florists still use carnations, gladiolas, and leatherleaf?
Many florists continue to use these materials primarily because they are cost-stable, widely available year-round, and help manage pricing pressure in a highly competitive industry. They allow shops to meet fixed price points, particularly for traditional or mass market high-volume arrangements.
