Every one of these has the same ancestor: somebody deciding a woman who knew things was dangerous.

Witches, skulls, black cats, a full moon. Four symbols that spent a few hundred years as accusations and now sell out every October, which is its own kind of happy ending.

Eight designs in this corner of the shop - skeleton witch, sunflower skull, the good-or-bad witch, the black cat under a full moon. Gothic without being grim.

Two groups of people do not get to opt out of Halloween: teachers and nurses.

Teachers because thirty kids will notice, and remember, and bring it up in March. Nurses because someone has to be the one thing on the night shift that isn't grim.

So we made six for them. "Boo-tiful," "Creepin' It Real," "Batty About Teaching," "Code Boo," the Halloween pain scale, and Boo Boo Crew - which, if you work nights, is less a joke and more a job description.

If you've got a teacher or a nurse in your life, this is the easy one. 35% off through Oct 15, free shipping.

The first thing a returning bomber crew got wasn't a debrief. It was a drink.

Eighth Air Force ground crews met the B-17s coming back from Germany with a double shot of wh***ey, poured on the tarmac before anyone walked into the interrogation hut. It wasn't a celebration. It was what you handed a 20-year-old before you asked him which planes he saw go down. In 1943, the odds of finishing all 25 missions ran about one in four.

Those same crews painted their luck on the outside of the airplane. Thirteen was the number nobody wanted, so they put it on the nose and dared it to do something about it — goggles down, cigar lit, riding the bomb like he owned it.

Superstition on the outside. Wh***ey on the inside. That's a shot glass.

1.5 oz with a heavy weighted base, printed directly onto the glass, made to order in the USA, free shipping.

A black cat with nine lives was exactly the kind of luck a bomber crew prayed for.

This WWII nose art pint glass puts a goggled black cat riding a live bomb — "Nine Lives" scrawled across the banner. Airmen leaned on charms like this the way they leaned on prayer: a cat that always lands on its feet, painted onto a plane headed somewhere it might not come back from. Nose art was morale, superstition and a wink at the odds, all in one coat of paint — now poured onto a heavy 16 oz glass.

What's the luckiest charm a crew ever painted on a warbird?

Nose art had exactly one job: bring them home.

Thirteen was the number nobody wanted. The crews took it anyway — put a grinning black cat on top of it, goggles down, cigar lit, riding the bomb like he owned it — and hung the whole thing on the nose of the plane that had to fly them back. Claim the bad omen and it can't be used against you. Men who flew into flak for a living believed that completely.

Which makes a pint glass the right home for it. The art belonged on the machine that carried them. This one belongs on the shelf where you raise a glass to the fact that it worked.

Heavy-bottom 16 oz mixing glass. The cat keeps his goggles on.

They weren't joking when they painted the unluckiest number in the world on a bomber. They were bargaining.

Not every plane got a pin-up. Some got a fistfight.

Alongside the painted girls, WWII crews covered their aircraft in scrappy animals — lucky cats, junkyard dogs, roosters with the gloves already laced. Part joke, part armor. It is a little easier to climb into a machine that might not bring you home when the thing has a cartoon on the side grinning at whatever's coming.

That's "C**k of the Walk." Helmet on, goggles up, chest out — a little scrapper absolutely certain he runs this airfield, and probably right. Cartoon nose art was never decoration. It was attitude you could read from the taxiway.

Lucky cats, boxing roosters, grinning bulldogs — every cartoon painted on a WWII plane meant something specific.

In Europe, bomber crews painted luck on their planes. In the Pacific, they painted paradise.

Island-hopping crews were stationed inside the postcard — coral dust, heat, and a whole war between them and the beach the brochures promised. So the nose art became a promise instead: palm fronds, hibiscus, and a girl worth getting home for.

"Pacific Pearl" is that promise in one image — sailor collar, island sarong, perched on a bomb like she's got nowhere better to be. Painted the way the crews would have wanted it. Garment-dyed Comfort Colors tee, 13 colors, 25% off right now.

Six minutes over Midway. That's all it took one "slow" Navy dive bomber to sink three carriers and turn the whole Pacific war. 📖 Read the story → https://bentheretravel.com/sbd-dauntless-dive-bomber/?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=pacific_pearl

👇 Europe got the black cats and lucky numbers. The Pacific got the palm trees. Which theater had the better nose art?

The Navy called it the radioman-gunner. Every crew called it the tail gunner.

In the back seat of an SBD Dauntless — the dive bomber that turned the Pacific war at Midway — the second crewman rode facing backwards, twin .30s between him and anything on their six.

Our "Tail Gunner" takes the job title a little more literally. Rosie bandana, white shorts, both hands on the Brownings — and a pilot up front grinning like a man who knows exactly how lucky he is. Cheeky pin-up humor, exactly the way the crews painted it back then.
